Tom Hanks, the living legend, made his acting debut in the 1980 horror film He Knows You’re Alone. Since then, Hanks’ extraordinary acting performance has left an impression on the film industry. Most of us know him from Catch Me If You Can, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan, and Captain Phillips. Hanks has won two Academy Awards for Best Actor for his roles in Forrest Gump and Philadelphia. Fans recently saw him in Wes Anderson’s film Asteroid City and are now waiting for his future projects. 1. Masters of the Air (2023)
Upcoming American war drama streaming TV miniseries for Apple TV+ Masters of the Air is set to be released in late 2023. Produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Steven Spielberg, the war drama is based on the 2007 book by Donald L. Miller of the same name. The story follows the actions of the 100th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. Masters of the Air serves as a sequel to Band of Brothers (2001) and The Pacific (2010). The cast includes Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Raff Law, and James Murray, among others.
2. Here (2024)
Tom Hanks and the cast of Forrest Gump (1994), which included Robin Wright, Eric Roth, and Robert Zemeckis are coming back together after about three decades for Here. The film is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Richard McGuire. Written by Roth and Zemeckis and directed by Zemeckis, the story focuses on the events of a single room and its inhabitants from the past into the future. The cast of the film features brilliant actors like Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, Leslie Zemeckis, Kelly Reilly, Gwilym Lee, and Michelle Dockery. Tom Hanks collaborates alongside Zemeckis, Gary Goetzman, Bill Block, Jack Rapke, and others to produce the movie. Though there is no official announcement of a release date, Here is anticipated to be released in 2024.
3. In the Garden of Beasts (TBA)
World War II movie In the Garden of Beasts has been in the planning and production for over a decade. The film is based on Erik Larson’s non-fiction book of the same title. In the beginning, the film was established at Universal in 2011, however, it was later taken by StudioCanal. Through Playtone Productions, the original producers of the film Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are still in this project. Hanks will play the role of Chicago professor William Dodd. In the 1930s Dodd was appointed US Ambassador to Hitler’s Germany. He initially settles in Berlin but as he witnesses Hitler asserting European countries, he starts to acquire more accounts of violence against the Jews. The period drama is being directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, and Darkest Hour).
4. Major Matt Mason (TBA)
Major Matt Mason is based on the same-named Mattel action figure. After working with Akiva Goldsman on The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, Hanks will again bring life to the titular character who works and lives on the Moon. The figure of this adventure movie is the subject of a short story written by Pulitzer Award winner Michael Chabon. This Mattel action figure gained popularity in the 1960s. A massive cast of supporting actors including aliens and space crew who can be both enemies and allies are likely to appear in the film. Due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it will take some time before the film’s development can move ahead.
