Any film is only as good as the amount of immersion it provides for the audience. We love playing video games because they directly put us in our character’s shoes where we practically perform the tasks through the medium of joystick. When it comes to cinema this becomes extremely difficult to do as we’re simply sitting and watching something, unless the image on the screen strikes an emotional connection with us we won’t be bothered to watch it further. Which is where IMAX comes in. Nowadays all the big blockbusters are shot in IMAX because the filmmakers and audience realizes that the level immersion in an image IMAX offers is unparalleled in the cinematic medium. If you haven’t tried IMAX before, let’s look at which upcoming films this year can provide you with that experience.
The Creator (October 29th, 2023)
The Creator is a new sci-fi film from Gareth Edwards, who we know because of his work in big franchises like Star Wars and Monsterverse. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Wantanabe, Amar Chadha-Patel, Benedict Wong and Allison Janney. Based on Edwards’ past works and the film’s trailer, The Creator looks like a visual delight which has to be witnessed on the biggest screen possible. So, to watch it in IMAX which is believed to be the most captivating film format is the correct choice. The film is not just visuals, as based on the first reactions The Creator is a layered sci-fi drama that might be one of the best 2023 has to offer.
The Exorcist: Believer (October 6th, 2023)
The Exorcist: Believer is the first part of the three sequels planned of the original The Exorcist which will include The Exorcist: Deceiver in 2025. It is the direct sequel to the cult classic The Exorcist (1973). Even though I don’t like the original film, I can imagine what a sequel to The Exorcist can be with modern sensibilities and technologies. If you want to truly enjoy a horror film then the best way is to watch the film on the biggest screen possible so that you’re totally invested in the motion picture. So, if you’re planning to watch The Exorcist: Believer then make sure you book IMAX tickets.
Killers of the Flower Moon (October 20th, 2023)
Unless you’re living under a rock, there is no chance that you’ve not heard about Martin Scorsese. He is no one, just the greatest living director. Despite being 80 years old, the man is making us awesome movies one after the other. After delivering us The Irishman, Scorsese is back in action with Killers of the Flower Moon. The film which is supposedly 3 and a half hours long and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Louis Cancelmi and Lily Gladstone. The film premiered at Cannes 2023 and received a 5 minute long standing ovation. The critics who witnessed the spectacle cannot stop raving about it. If I really have to sell you to watch a Martin Scorsese film in IMAX then you’re not cut for cinema.
Napoleon (November 22nd, 2023)
Ridley Scott is no stranger to period dramas. In fact if I call the legendary filmmaker a period drama specialist then I won’t be wrong. Scott has over the year given us such cinematic gems that it in fact it is hard to believe one man can do so much. Whichever, film of his that I’ve seen, I have loved. Except for Blade Runner, because I have my fair share of issues with it. After The Last Duel, Scott is back with another period drama and the character he has chosen for it couldn’t have been better – Napoleon. I don’t think so you’d want to miss watching a film in IMAX from someone who has made Gladiator.
Wonka (December 15th, 2023)
Willi Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a highly influential film that came out in the 70s. The character of Willi Wonka has become so iconic in pop culture ever since then. In the film, he was portrayed in a villainous light, so, the casting of Timothee Chalamet in the upcoming spin-off Wonka, was questionable for me. However, after seeing the trailer it is clear that the man can do no wrong. Chalamet is as charismatic as he can be. The trailer looked amazing to me with good visuals and a fantastic story. It is really a different take on Willi Wonka. I love how they’ve built the world of the story and added a dramatic flare to the vibe. The treatment is on point, something we can expect from Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2). So, why not end the year with a delightful IMAX experience in the form of Wonka.
