Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel’s Mother Mary: Everything We Know

A24 finally dropped the first trailer for Mother Mary, and honestly? It feels like someone tossed a prestige pop-star biopic, a psychological thriller, and a gothic music video into a blender. And David Lowery went, “Yes, perfect.” The film, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, arrives in 2026, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be the stylishly deranged pop drama of the decade.

The Premise: Fame, Friendship, and a Whole Lot of Emotional Baggage

At the heart of Mother Mary lies Mary (Anne Hathaway), a world-famous pop superstar who is glamorous, troubled, and clearly spiraling in a way only A24 girls can. She turns to Sam (Michaela Coel), her estranged best friend and the fashion designer who helped build her career, to create a dress for her big comeback performance.

What should be a simple reunion immediately feels… tense. Like “there is history here, and none of it is fun” tense. The trailer hints at betrayal, emotional wounds, and the kind of fractured friendship that could fill ten episodes of a prestige limited series. And yet, Mary needs Sam. Sam might need Mary. And whatever tore them apart is definitely not done with them.

The Trailer: Glamour Meets Ritual Meets Existential Screaming

The trailer opens with Mary knocking on Sam’s door like someone reenacting a dramatic indie-movie apology. Inside? Vibes. Heavy vibes. Very quickly, the tone shifts from emotional drama to something that almost brushes against the supernatural. There are crimson rooms, candlelit moments, and Sam calmly asking Mary, “You think there’s something inside you? Let’s cast her out together.” Ma’am, WHAT?

Lowery isn’t confirming ghosts or demons. But the imagery definitely borrows from ritualistic symbolism, inner-haunting metaphors, and that “pop star exorcising her past” energy. Between that, we get quick shots of Mary performing in glittering, theatrical costumes; shots of Sam sewing like she’s battling demons through the needle; and Hathaway spiraling with the kind of acting that says “yes, she will be nominated.”

The editing is sharp, the lighting is moody, and the vibe is a delicious mix of Black Swan meets A Star Is Born with a sprinkle of dark-pop music video aesthetic.

Music & Style: This Isn’t Just a Drama; It’s a Full Pop Era

One reason the trailer already feels iconic? The music team. Original songs come from Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA twigs. Basically, the Avengers of alt-pop. Hathaway reportedly performs her own vocals, so we’re getting an actual pop-star performance from her, not a dub-over. Costumes are dramatic, gothic, avant-garde; the kind of couture you expect from a character who’s equal parts diva and disaster.

Filming wrapped in 2024, and with the trailer now out, A24 has confirmed the movie will release in April 2026. No exact day yet, but spring 2026 is officially Hathaway-season.
