Rotten Tomatoes have been infamous for giving MCU films great score on their review aggregating website. In fact many people have also pointed that the site seems biased towards the MCU as it gives DC movies consistently low scores even if they’re good but that is not the discussion for today. There have been times where RT have also addressed MCU’s misfires and rewarded them with low scores. Thor: The Dark World – 66%, Thor: Love and Thunder- 64% and Eternals which is the lowest rated MCU film of all time – 47%. Eternals is the only MCU movie to receive a Rotten rating on the site. Well, not anymore as it now has company thanks to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania disappointing critics worldwide. It has debuted on the site with the second lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of 51% which means this is the second MCU movie to have a Rotten rating.
So how does this much of negativity affect its box office numbers? Well, let’s see.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Is Not Bringing in the Big Bucks!
The Ant-Man threequel is set to earn $95 million to $100 million in North America over the traditional weekend and $110 through President’s Day on Monday. As it is the new nation-wide release it will take the #1 spot from at the box office from Magic Mike’s Last Dance from last week. At the international box office, the film is clearly making around $160 million, although estimates go up to $130-190 million. As the threequel is the first MCU movie after Spider-Man: No Way Home to release in the Land of the Dragon, the numbers go higher.
China is all set to bring in $35-$55 million. For comparison, her are the domestic numbers of Marvel movies that released last year- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($185 million), Thor: Love and Thunder ($144 million) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($181 million). This clearly tells you that Ant-Man’s numbers are significantly low. Although, if I’m being fair then the franchise has always had a lesser command on the box office than its fellow Avengers. We should compare the previous Ant-Man movies’ number.
2015’s Ant-Man ($57 million) and 2018’s sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp ($76 million domestically and $161 million globally). Considering these numbers the threequel’s figures look encouraging as they’re a significant jump. Both previous Ant-Man films tapped out at the box office with $519 million and $622 million worldwide, respectively. However, considering that Quantumania is an important part of the Kang saga it is disappointing to see the bland response to it. However, this maybe the effect of the negative reviews as well.
The core cast of the Ant-Man franchise including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas are returning. Along with these regulars, the supporting cast of the film has added Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors, Bill Murray and Michelle Pfeiffer.
