If a year ago anyone were to ask me will a cheesy unapologetic rom-com work in theatres given the current landscape of cinema? Well, I’d have said no. Because if you’re expecting the audience to step out of the comfort of their homes then it has to be worth it. They want to witness a spectacle, an action packed adventure, or a Christopher Nolan. Jokes aside, rom-coms are no longer a genre the the audience turns up to watch in theatres. Well, 2023’s Anyone But You is the exception to that perception. It has to be the biggest surprise hit of the year. A true sleeper hit. Well, given the success of the film, Sony Pictures is now capitalizing on the impending romantic season by releasing a special version of the film for true fans.
New Valentine’s Day Cut of Anyone But You Is Releasing This Week!
It was reported that Sony Pictures will release a Valentine’s Day special edition of Anyone But You in theatres called Anyone But You: The Valentine Encore ahead of Valentine’s Day on February 9th, 2024. This move by the studio will act as a final push to draw more audience in theatres and boosts its box office performance.
The film originally premiered in theatres on December 22nd last year and is still going strong in theatres. Made on a budget of $25 million, the film has earned a staggering $151.7 million until now. The film is already a huge box office success and this is despite its digital and VOD release on January 23rd, 2024. Meaning a section of the audience is willingly turning up in theatres to watch the film.
Given the amazing momentum the film has gained over the course of one month, Sony Pictures is looking to give the film’s theatrical run one final boost by releasing a slightly extended cut of the film ahead of the romantic weekend of Valentine’s Day. This is a smart strategy from the studio and we can expect a rise in Anyone But You’s box office collection.
As mentioned, the film is available on digital and VOD platforms. If you’re waiting for its physical media debut then Anyone But You will be available on physical media formats like DVD and Blu-ray on February 27th, 2024. There is no update on the film’s streaming release date.
However, considering this is a Sony Production, Anyone but You will most likely head to Netflix, thanks to the deal between Sony and the streaming giant.
The movies generally come six months after their theatrical release. Considering that, Anyone but You should be available to stream on Netflix in late June 2024. Along with Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney in the lead, the rom com also boasts a fantastic supporting cast including Darren Barnet, Alexandra Shipp, Hadley Robinson and Dermot Mulroney.
