Avatar 2 Is Highest Grossing Hollywood Film At India Box Office!

Another day, another milestone crossed by Avatar 2. It feels like every morning I get up I’m flooded with Avatar 2 news. The film has refused to stop on the box office. Many projections before the film’s release were negative. Many analysts had predicted that the film would not come close to the original’s success and given its insane budget of $460 Million might be a financial failure but what they didn’t know was never to bet against James Cameron. The man is a force to reckon with. Whatever he touches turns to gold or rather money in this case. Avatar: The Way of Water has been showered with love from the audience. The reviews of the film was great and it was certainly an enchanting experience. Despite the slow opening of the film, the sequel managed to cross $1 Billion in 12 days.

One of the only three films to cross this milestone in 2022. The success of the sequel has made Cameron the first director to have three films over $1.5 Billion at the worldwide box office, all of them are consecutive. He is second on the list of Highest Grossing Directors, behind Spielberg but given the upcoming Avatar sequels, he will surpass the legend too. The Way of Water is not only doing phenomenal in the US or China (where it has grossed $200 Million+) but also in smaller markets like India. The film had started on a bombastic note and has continued its strong hold on the box office. In just 24 days, of its release the film has surpassed the lifetime collection of Avengers: Endgame which was the biggest Hollywood film in India.

Avatar: The Way of Water Has No Stopping!

Avatar: The Way of Water had an extremely good Week 4 in India where it scored a 16 Crore nett plus. It dropped 60% from last week which was a holiday week. The film is trending very strongly in regions like Mumbai and South India with Tamil Nadu leading but the contribution. However, that might change soon as big local films are releasing this week. The sequel has in its 24 days at the box office has collected Rs. 362 Crores nett which is 5 Crores less than Avengers: Endgame’s Rs. 367 Crores.

However, the GROSS numbers tell a completely different story. As the Way of Water has collected Rs. 458 Crores ($55.8 Million) which is more than Avengers: Endgame’s 437 Crore GROSS. The film may cross Endgame’s nett collections in the coming days as well but it has to be noted that because of big local releases, the sequel is set to drop down to 15-20% from 50% in the Hindi Circuits and South. There major difference between nett and gross box office collection is gross box office collection includes the money received from the total sale of film tickets while nett is gross minus deductions made by the government like entertainment tax, service tax, etc.

The sequel has collected $517 Million domestically and the international global cume is $1.71 Billion. The made the sequel cross the lifetime collections of The Lion King ($1.66 Billion) and Jurassic World ($1.67 Billion) placing itself 7th on the list. Avatar 2 is on the track of crossing $2 Billion, this will make it the only film post pandemic to achieve this milestone. Despite the sequel being the most expensive film ever produced, it has turned out to be profitable because of its extraordinary box office run.

Once the sequel crosses $2 Billion, the competition is quite strong and there is no guarantee if it will be able to topple the top five, including 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion), 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion), 1997’s Titanic ($2.201 billion), and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion). After $2 Billion I don’t know how much can the sequel pull through but if it is anything like its predecessor then it will hold strong and keep minting money.
