James Cameron has an annoying habit of reinventing cinema or creating some new technology every time he touches a camera and he did exactly that when he made a sequel to Avatar 13 years later. It looks like the audience loves whatever James Cameron touches. Avatar 2: The Way of Water is absolutely owning the box office as the film till Friday has collected $1.556 Billion as its worldwide cume. This means that it has officially surpassed Top Gun: Maverick’s $1.48 Billion and become the Highest Grossing Film of 2022. The film also becomes the first release of 2022 to collect $1 Billion from international markets ($1.075 Billion) while its domestic collection is $483 Million. The figures also point towards Way of Water’s official entry into the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films Ever beating out Paul Walker’s farewell Fast and Furious entry Furious 7 (which grossed $1.515 billion) of the overall Top 10.
For now the film is on the ninth spot which is led why its predecessor-Avatar (2.92 Billion), but it is certain that it is going to climb up that list very soon. It is almost certain that the sequel will overtake these films based on the current trends. The unsurmountable success of Avatar 2 also means that James Cameron has achieved a career milestone that is only a dream for many.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water- James Cameron Climbs Up the Highest Grossing Director List!
Avatar: The Way of Water has crushed many box office records in its very limited run of less than a month. The film is projecting staggering numbers and there seems to be no stopping to it. However, this time Avatar 2 has crushed a record rather created one that I don’t think will be broken by anybody in the near future. James Cameron has done it again and that means he has also awarded himself a record that only a visionary like him could’ve imagined. Cameron has become the first director to have with three movies over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. This is no joke. The closest anyone comes to this are the Russo Brothers with two movies over $1.5 Billion.
Cameron has also climbed up the list of Highest Earning Directors of All Time. He has surpassed the Russo Brothers and placed himself second, just below the legendary Steven Spielberg. Check out the complete list:
- Steven Spielberg – $10.65B
- James Cameron – $7.88B
- The Russo Brothers – $6.84B
- Peter Jackson – $6.54B
- Michael Bay – $6.5B
- David Yates – $6.35B
- Christopher Nolan – $4.96B
- J.J. Abrams – $4.65B
- Tim Burton – $4.41B
- Ridley Scott – $4.37B
Given the recently proven popularity of the Avatar franchise and three upcoming sequels, it is almost inevitable that Cameron is going to surpass Steven Spielberg and wear a new crown in his head but that is sometime in the future, however, another feather in Cameron’s cap that I can see instantly is he will be the first director to have three films $2 Billion at the worldwide box office. No one can beat this record. That too all the films are consecutive. Wow! It is only a matter of time that Way of Water passes $2 Billion.
When that happens Cameron would be free to add this feather to his esteemed cap. When it comes to directors who have multiple movies over $1 billion, that exclusive list includes James Cameron, Colin Trevorrow, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, Jon Watts, James Wan, Pierre Coffin & Kyler Balda, Michael Bay, and the Russo Brothers. The highest grossing films of all time list for now looks something like this:
1) Avatar – $2.92B
2) Avengers: Endgame – $2.80B
3) Titanic – $2.20B
4) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens – $2.07B
5) Avengers: Infinity War – $2.05B
6) Spider-Man: No Way Home – $1.92B
7) Jurassic World – $1.67B
8) The Lion King – $1.66B
9) Avatar: The Way of Water – $1.56B
10) The Avengers – $1.52B
