Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water is absolutely owning the box office as the film till Friday has collected $1.547 Billion as its worldwide cume. This means that it has officially surpassed Top Gun: Maverick’s $1.48 Billion and become the Highest Grossing Film of 2022. These figures were provided by Entertainment Weekly. The film also becomes the first release of 2022 to collect $1 Billion from international markets ($1.075 Billion) while its domestic collection is $471 Million. These are staggering numbers. The figures also point towards Way of Water’s official entry into the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films Ever beating out Paul Walker’s farewell Fast and Furious entry Furious 7 (which grossed $1.515 billion) of the overall Top 10.

For now the film is on the ninth spot which is led why its predecessor-Avatar (2.92 Billion), but it is certain that it is going to climb up that list very soon. It is almost certain that the sequel will overtake these films based on the current trends. It will also cross the sacred $2 Billion threshold which was considered to be impossible in the post pandemic era. While the film’s production budget is easily around $460 Million that makes it the most expensive film ever to be produced in the world, James Cameron updated us that his sequel doesn’t need to earn $2 Billion rather $1.5 Billion to break even, this means The Way of Water is already profitable. In celebration of this achievement, Cameron has given us an optimistic update about the upcoming Avatar 3, 4, and 5.

Cameron further added, “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay. I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3’, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic.”

Cameron concluded with, “And then ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written. We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
