I think now it is safe to assume that Avatar 3 is going to happen. If this much success is not enough, then James Cameron should really cut down the budget of his movies. Avatar: The Way of Water is a sequel to Cameron’s magnum opus Avatar (2009) which shattered all box office records and still wears the crown of the Highest Grossing Film of All Time. The sequel takes after its predecessor as since its release it has been an absolute abomination for any other film. The sequel recently became the Highest Grossing Hollywood film in India ($54 Million) beating 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Despite the trying times in China, the film is doing so well in the land of the dragon ($188 Million+). According to the latest reports, Avatar: The Way of Water has earned $570 Million domestically and its global cume is $1.9 Billion.
This means it will soon cross Spider-Man: No Way Home’s lifetime collection. The film will inevitably cross $2 Billion, making Cameron to be the first filmmaker to have three films to cross $2 Billion at the global box office. The film has earned enough to turn profit even on its gigantic production budget of $460 Million. Yes, it is the most expensive film ever produced. As, everything is hunky dory now, James Cameron is happy as he teases us about the things we’re going to see in the upcoming Avatar movie. He has already revealed that the third film will introduce Fire Na’vi and today we have another leak that Cameron spilled in a recent interview.
Avatar 3 Won’t Narrated By Jake Sully!
A Twitter called @eywasfavorite shared a recent of James Cameron, director of the Avatar movies revealed that Avatar 3: The Seed Bearer won’t be narrated by Jake Sully played Sam Worthington. This will be the first time in the series that a new narrator will tell us the story. It is not Neytiri, just to be clear. It is a character introduced in the sequel who was surprisingly given a lot of screen time and I think a lot of people resonated with- Lo’ak. Honestly this decision from Cameron doesn’t seem as a surprise.
I’d mentioned in my Avatar 2 review that the film felt more of Lo’ak’s then Jake. It is very likely that the upcoming sequels will be focused on Lo’ak more and he might become the central character. This does hint that Jake Sully might die in the third film. A narrator can’t die that we know, so Lo’ak narrating the third film would enable the possibility of his death. We already know that Fire Na’vi are evil people and the third film’s point is to convince Neytiri that Na’vis can be evil too. What can be a better way to do so?
Cameron did however, mentioned that each new Avatar sequel will have a different narrator so it doesn’t seem like Lo’ak is taking it away from Jake, its being passed on. Although, I still believe that Jake might meet his maker at the end of Avatar 3. Regardless, here is what Cameron said in the interview in question,
“Lo‘ak really emerged as a character that people went with, so I might find ways to sort of… now, he’s already the [narrator]- oh, I’m giving away something here, but it’s okay. Every one of the Avatars… I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what’s coming. Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie 1 and movie 2, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character, and movie 3 is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”
