Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar was a cinematic achievement like no other and so when James Cameron spawned a sequel aka Avatar: The Way of Water for it, I was ready to be blown away once again. After 13 years years, finally I got to see the continuation of Pandora’s story and it was an experience like no other and I can’t wait to see more from the franchise. The first Avatar had big job to accomplish as while telling a story it also had to make us fall in love with this alien planet and that could have only be done if we experience the place, if we truly connect with the colorful and soulful forests of Pandora and Cameron was able to make us fall in love. I thought, in the sequel this would not be the case as he can directly begin with since the world is pretty much established but as the sequel focuses on water, we’re shown its way.

We once experience the water tribe of the Na’vis and fall in love with another part of Pandora all over again. Once again a big chunk of the movie was reserved for us to experience the world just like the original and if you think you’ve seen all of Pandora then you’re wrong as Cameron plans to show us another new tribe in the upcoming threequel which means that the third movie will also have a part reserved for experiencing the new tribe and world.

Avatar 3: Cameron Plans to introduce the Ash People!

The Way of Water showed us how Na’vis are different across various cultures. Their body type and structure are all determined by where they live as they adapt to the surroundings in order for survival. The Metakayina are the water tribe which were introduced to us in the Way of Water and they’re not the only new sub-species. Cameron is planning to introduce another type of Na’vi in Avatar 3. In a recent interview with French newspaper 20 minutes, director Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 will reinvent the wheel for the audiences.

The threequel will introduce a new side of Pandora and its indigenous population, called the Ash People who represent a fiery and volcanic biome. Cameron said, “Different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the “Ash People”.”

The fire may not be the only distinguishing factor of these people as Cameron tells us that these will be a highly negative sub species in nature subverting the expectations and beliefs that the original Avatar and Way of Water has propagated about the Na’vis. That they are always good and the humans are bad. Cameron further added, “I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because, so far, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.”

Cameron also revealed that Avatar 3 won’t solely focus on Pandora as it will explore new worlds while continuing the story of the main characters however that is if Way of Water does well on the box office. In conclusion Cameron said, “We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 is received, if it finds its audience.”

I don’t think so that Cameron needs to worry about Avatar 2 finding its audience as the film crossed the $1 Billion mark worldwide in only 12 days and the 16 days box office total of the film is $1.398 Billion thanks to the lack of competition and the festive season. It is only the third film to cross the $1 Billion mark this year and it will soon become the highest grossing film of 2022. That being said, Way of Water has to keep up with its massive budget of $460 Million and according to Cameron the sequel has to earn $2 Billion to break even.

The current trajectory of the sequel certainly predicts a bright future for the Avatar franchise. The titles of the Avatar sequels are reportedly revealed and they are:

  1. The third installment in the Avatar franchise will be called Avatar 3: The Seed Bearer.
  2. The fourth part of the Avatar saga will bear the title Avatar 4: The Tulkan Rider.
  3. The concluding chapter of Cameron’s Avatar odyssey shall be named Avatar 5: The Quest for Eywa.
