Avatar is the cinema changing film of James Cameron that released in 2009. Today we’re aware what Avatar is and what a technical masterpiece it was from James Cameron especially in 2009 when it had released. When the first trailer of the film was released, it alienated the audience. They were confused as what it is. Many mistook to be part of the Smurfs universe. After this initial criticism, Cameron was pissed so he announced something that we now call a masterstroke. Cameron made the call that the film would only release in 3D. Because the type of CGI it was we know it will suck in the audience into the wonderland of Pandora. After this move, Cameron played another trick. A week before the release, he bought all IMAX theatres’ tickets for one day and displayed 15 minutes of the film for free in 3D.
When the audiences experienced the visual treat in the form it was supposed to be seen, everyone understood that what Cameron has made is special. What followed was hordes of people rushing into the theatres to witness the spectacle themselves. Without belonging to an existing IP, the film managed to beat every other film ever. It took the crown of highest grossing film worldwide from Cameron’s Titanic in 2009. Since, the movie has had previous re-releases but they were futile as it simply added to the already huge stack of money, until 2019. Ten years after being the king at the box office, Avatar dethroned by Marvel’s ultimate end for its Infinity Saga- Avengers Endgame. The film earned $2.8 Billion beating out Avatar’s $2.79 Billion. James Cameron congratulated Marvel on the success of Endgame.
However, just 1 year 8 months after this Avatar was re-released in China and the film took its crown back from Endgame. Ever since then no one has touched it. However, today it seems like even after 12 years of its release, Avatar continues to rule the box office and shatter new records making it difficult for any film to surpass it.
Avatar Crosses $2.9 Billion After Re-Release!
Avatar was recently re-released in theatres once again and no the motive wasn’t to earn a little more from the film, I mean that’s just a cherry on top. Since the sequel is coming out this year in December Cameron wanted his young and new viewers to experience the first film just like anyone else who saw it 12 years ago. He is aware that watching a film like this at home and watching in a theatre is different. This is also acts as market study for producers and investors so that they deduce whether the general audience really cares about Avatar.
And from the looks of it they do, so the money that has been riding on this film would be fruitful. While the sequel might not earn as much as the first one, especially after the re-release, it will still earn a pile of money if you look at it objectively. The Numbers reporting that the film has now passed $2.9 Billion at the global box office. The jaw-dropping total comprises $779 million domestically and $2.13 billion internationally. Despite holding the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time,
Avatar’s domestic total remains only the fourth-highest behind the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I don’t think so any film is going to dethrone Avatar anytime soon. Unless Marvel somehow starts making better content, which seems impossible at this stage, there is no franchise big enough to cross Avatar, unless the sequel goes absolutely bonkers or James Cameron comes up with another movie which will take the crown from Avatar, like he did to Titanic.
