Avatar: The Way of Water

Last week we got the news that The Way of Water has sunk Titanic at the worldwide box office as it rose to the third spot on the Highest Grossing Films of All Time. After battling it out for months after release Avatar 2 conquered its biggest competitor yet and managed to surpass it. At first their battle looked pretty straightforward with Avatar 2 easily surpassing Titanic but there was a twist in the tale as Titanic re-released for its 25th Anniversary. However, after a week long battle Avatar 2 emerged as the winner. With that the sequel achieved its biggest milestone yet. However, after this I was unsure whether the Way of Water will do anything significant at the box office as the competition was too tough with Endgame $532 million away and the original Avatar $650 million.

But as usual, James Cameron has surprised me as the Way of Water has beaten another record at the box office, it has of course not crossed the lifetime collections of Avatar or Endgame but it has conquered Europe.

Avatar: The Way of Water Conquers Heavy!

Avatar 2’s worldwide collection till now stands at $2.26 billion which is amazing and it is still above Titanic. The record that the film broke with this week was it became the highest grossing film in Europe. It is now the No. 1 highest-grossing film of all time in Europe, even beating out the original Avatar. Even though the film has beaten the original Avatar in this major way, there is no chance that the sequel will surpass its predecessor or in fact even Avengers: Endgame in the original release. Maybe when the film re-releases which is a staple when it comes to Cameron films, maybe it eventually bridges the gap between the two films and itself. Here is a list of the Highest Grossing Films of All Time:

  1. Avatar – $2.9237B
  2. Avengers: Endgame – $2.7994B
  3. Avatar: The Way of Water – $2.267B
  4. Titanic – $2.248B
  5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.0713B

It no longer matters but Avatar 2 remains to be the most expensive film ever to be produced with an insane production budget of $460 million. The success of the film has led to the official renewal of more Avatar sequels which would release at key intervals in this decade, with the third one coming in December 2024. Considering the franchise has already collected more than $5 billion with only two films, it has to be seen how much more will the upcoming sequels add to that number.
