James Cameron is one of the most revered directors of this era. His persistent effort to make the impossible possible in the medium of cinema is commendable. I don’t think so there is any filmmaker who comes close to the scale of his movies. Really, all his movies since the nineties have only grown bigger and bigger. The reason that he is able to work at such a scale is because his movies earn very well at the box office. He stands second in the list of Highest Grossing Directors, just behind Steven Spielberg. After the release of his latest film – Avatar: The Way of Water, he has three of the four highest grossing films. With Way of Water and Titanic fighting it out for third spot as the flick has just re-released. Way of Water would’ve crossed its earnings this weekend but since the re-release, Titanic’s gross also increased.
There is a gap of only $4 million between Titanic (2.218 billion) and Way of Water ($2.214 billion) but I have a feeling that the sequel would cross Titanic eventually. That being said, how much Cameron make of his movies? I mean for a man whose films are so successful how much does he earn? Well, he has got a net worth of $700 million. So how much did he earn from Avatar: The Way of Water, well, just like the film’s collections, it is huge.
Avatar: The Way of Water- What Was James Cameron’s Salary?
Forbes just revealed the highest earning entertainers of the last year. The list confirms what everyone suspected. James Cameron made an unsurmountable amount of money from Avatar: The Way of Water. The article states that James Cameron has earned $95 million from the film. Additionally, this figure was part of the deal which mentions “backend-heavy with bonuses for crossing certain box office thresholds.” This means that he will earn an additional sum of money over the already huge amount of $95 million.
Honestly, earning this much amount of money from just one film is not a new thing for James Cameron, which is part of the reason why he invests so much time and effort in his films. His last film- the original Avatar, earned Cameron a total sum of $350 million. This was because of a first-dollar deal (earning a percentage of the box office gross, even before it turns profitable) or an “at cash break” gross (a deal that takes into account a movie’s production costs, but not other costs).
Apart from the box office numbers, the $350 million also attributed to the amazing sale of physical media copies of Avatar. Even in Titanic, Cameron’s masterstroke was to put in his own money into the film ($8 million), which in return earned him around $650 million. Insane, right? The film was running over budget and to tackle this issue, Cameron invested his own money which provided him with unbelievable returns as that amount got him the royalties based on the film’s success. Based on the deal that Cameron has with Disney and the milestones that the sequel has already crossed, I cannot imagine how much money he has earned.
