Barbie has created history at Warner Bros. as the film has managed to topple Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two as the studio’s biggest theatrical hit ever. The Margot Robbie-led film has made over $1.3 billion at the box office worldwide as of writing. Deathly Hallows: Part 2 originally held the title of the highest global box office for a Warner Bros. film. And, with more time left in theaters, Barbie’s performance could still continue to grow even more. Ever since the film crossed the billion dollar mark, there was chatter that the film is on course to become 2023’s Highest Grosser, besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.35 billion. So, has it? Has the impossible happened? Did a live action Barbie adaptation out do every other film of 2023?

Barbie Beats The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

According to Box Office Mojo, Barbie has grossed $1.381 billion at the worldwide box office, officially beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.365 billion. Here are the Top 5 Grossing movies of 2023:

  1. Barbie – $1.381 billion
  2. The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $1.36 billion
  3. Oppenheimer – $853 million
  4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – $845.5 million
  5. Fast X – $704.7 million

There seems to be no other movie that will beat Barbie this year. But then again, no one expected Barbie to be such a success. So, the future is a mystery. Barbie will also have a limited IMAX release will run for one week beginning on September 22nd. This will take place before Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction film – The Creator releases in IMAX theaters on September 29th. The limited run should further help the film’s cause.

Barbie will also be officially available for Digital and VOD purchase on Tuesday, September 12.

This summer has Barbenheimer frenzy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years.

The film’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
