Latest box office projections for Barbie and Oppenheimer put Barbie at earning $70 million or $80 million in its opening weekend. This is double the projected box office for Oppenheimer, which is expected to make around $40 million when it opens. Both films have a budget of around $100 million, though, even if Oppenheimer doesn’t outperform Barbie, they’re both likely to turn a profit by the end of their theatrical runs. So, the impossible has happened Barbie has won the box office race against Oppenheimer. Who would’ve thought the director of indie films like Ladybird and Little Women would beat a Christopher Nolan film. Well, Gerwig might not be as indie as we previously thought as in a recent interview she confessed that she’d like to direct a superhero movie.
After Barbie Will Greta Gerwig Will Make A Superhero Movie?
Greta Gerwig revealed during an interview with Rolling Stone that she fancies directing a superhero film, “Yes, of course. It would have to be something I had a feeling for and a relationship to,” Gerwig revealed. “A well-shot, well-executed action movie is just incredible. It’s a dance. I’ve never done anything like that. But even in a small way, working with the stunt coordinator who did fight choreography on Barbie, he was just fascinating. It was so fun to talk to him.” Reflecting on whether Barbie is already a superhero movie, Gerwig laughed, adding, “Yeah, in a way. It’s iconic in the same way. And it’s sort of mythic in the same way.”
She also talked about her philosophy before she took up the job of helming the movie of the iconic Mattel character, “That feeling that I had was knowing that [Barbie] would be really interesting terror, [that’s] usually that’s where the best stuff is,” Gerwig said in 2021. “I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.'”
Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
Barbie are set to release in theatres near you on 21st July 2023.
