The first half of 2023 has opened rather dully, there is absolutely no hype about anything. However, I think the best content of the year is yet to come. The summer has begun fantastically with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse but the box office ignition soon cooled down as The Flash crash landed at the box office. Warner Bros. are approximately losing over $200 million over the Flashpoint adaptation. That is already the third DC movie the studio has lost money on. So, what now? Well, the studio has a big release coming in July – Barbie. The Greta Gerwig directorial has generated enough buzz to open double the amount of Oppenheimer’s opening weekend collection. However, is the movie actually good because we don’t know anything about the plot. Well, some early reviews have surfaced the internet. Let’s check them out.
Barbie Movie Early Reviews & Reactions: Not As Good As We Thought?
In a new report from Time, Rotten Tomatoes certified critic Eliana Dockterman shared her thoughts about the Barbie movie, “So, what exactly is this movie? Even with the onslaught of pink-tinged marketing, Warner Bros. has managed to keep the plot under wraps. I’m not here to spoil the film, which I watched in Gerwig’s temporary office, a gray space in Chelsea accessorized with a magenta Barbie doormat. But I can share that it’s a fun yet self-aware romp with shades of ‘Clueless’ and ‘Legally Blonde’. It’s also stuffed full of ideas, and occasionally overwhelmed by them.”
Another journalist Ruimy shared what she has heard about the film from critics who have watched it, “I have spoken to a few journalists so far who have seen ‘Barbie’, two were mixed and one was somewhat positive. Do I still think it could get good reviews? Of course. This is such a small sampling and we already know how the tide can turn quickly.” I know this is simply one proper review but this is because the review embargo is still active. The film’s review embargo is reportedly set to lift on Thursday, July 13, so that’s when fans can expect to see full reviews posted online.
Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
Barbie is set to release in theatres near you on 21st July 2023.
