I think at this point everyone is aware that there is a live action Barbie movie on its way. The film is the first to adapt the iconic Mattel toyline into a live action flick. The film is helmed by Greta Gerwig who is an Oscar winning director for Lady Bird. She has co-written the film with Marriage Story’s director Noah Baumbach. Not to mention Gerwig and Baumbach have been in a romantic relationship from 2011. So them writing a Rom-Com like this could be really great. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and stars Margot Robbie in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef. The film has been well into production since Spring.
The filming of the film has been going on in London under tight security, which has to be joke seeing the amount of set photos we’ve gotten that have revealed so many sets and different outfits of Barbie and Ken. Apart from them, the official first looks revealed by Warner Bros. shows us Robbie’s Barbie driving a pink convertible in a pink set and Gosling’s Ken in a denim vest flaunting his physique. We’ve been getting regular updates about the Barbie movie however, lately the updates have been scant and there is a pretty good reason for that. The filming for the movie wrapped up about 2 months ago. Recently, the movie’s director Greta Gerwig talked about the process of making Barbie. She described the process as absolutely terrifying. Why? Read below to find out why?
Why Was Greta Gerwig Terrified While Making Barbie?
While speaking to Variety on Dua Lipa’s At Your Service podcast the Little Women director said, “It was terrifying. There’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘well, anything is possible.’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
The director also spoke about her and her partner Noah Baumbach signing to write the film’s script around the same time as Robbie’s casting. She said, “That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror,” she said of her decision to shepherd the film, which marks her third feature as a solo director. “Usually that’s where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.'”
The Barbie movie is slated to be released on July 21st 2023.
