You might know Greta Gerwig from her works in Frances Ha, Ladybird, Little Women, etc. If you’re someone familiar with her work you know she is one of the most original voices in the industry. Did you ever predict that she would make a Barbie film? Well, stranger things have happened. The talented filmmaker joined the project as Warner Bros. and Mattel collaborated to finally make a live action Barbie film. The script for the film has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). This itself is enough for me to watch the film. Barbie’s script has been called as the best script ever by more than one actors associated with the project, including Ryan Gosling. Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart.
The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef. The film is releasing on the exact date as Oppenheimer which has caused quite a swirl. Despite much speculation, neither of the films have been delayed, which is why Warner Bros. has finally released the main trailer for the film after teasing us for over a year.
Barbie Main Trailer Reveals What The Film Will Be About!
Right off the bat, after Avatar: The Way of Water this is one of the most beautiful trailer I’ve seen. Sorry, Oppenheimer but some of the frames in the trailer were simply gorgeous. The pink theme that Gerwig has stuck with is definitely transcending us into an unseen reality. I don’t mean to come across as a simp but Margot Robbie is tantalizing. She looks like the absolute heart of the film. Apart from the visual beauty of the film, there is some meat revealed in the trailer as well.
This is what I gathered from the trailer, there is a Barbie in Barbie Land who discovers that she is living in some fake reality and goes to the real world which will come with consequences of itself. The film would definitely tackle the theme of being the best version of yourself. The film might be absolutely mad but the sheer commitment and experiments that Gerwig has brought to the project wants me to see it. She could’ve easily taken out the easy way and given us a generic adaptation. Watch the Main Trailer for Barbie on YouTube:
