Barbie movie was the biggest surprise of 2023. Despite the talented cast and crew, no one thought that the film would become such a pop culture phenomenon. However, coupled with Oppenheimer the Greta Gerwig directorial started a movement for original cinema and shattered records for doing so. Barbie has grossed $1.44 billion at the worldwide box office. The film toppled The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.365 billion to claim the number one spot of 2023 box office, and based on all the releases lined up this year, I don’t think so any other film will touch Barbie’s collection. With such impressive theatrical performance, it was natural that the film won’t have an early streaming release date. However, it has been more than four months since the film’s theatrical debut and we have no update on the matter. Although, be it unofficially, but today we have a potential date for the film’s streaming debut.
Barbie Streaming Release Date Revealed By HBO Listings!
Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Barbie would start streaming on their in house streaming platform Max in Fall of 2023. Considering that the Fall season is ending on December 21st, it leaves only a few dates for the film to start streaming. Fans may finally know when Barbie will start streaming on Max thanks to a new TV listing from the HBO network. HBO’s newly released TV schedule for December 16th reveals that Kevin Spacey’s Recount, a political drama will be in its prime 8 p.m. slot.
This has many, including WhenToStream, a reliable platform when it comes to streaming and digital debuts of films, speculate that Recount is actually a placeholder for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Not only does HBO typically occupy this prime placement for a popular flick, but the network has often, including for The Flash and The Nun II, reserved this slot for a movie to air the day after it arrives on Max on a Friday. There are more reasons to believe that Recount is just placeholder for Barbie.
Starting with, the Saturdays leading up to December 16th, HBO has placed some major blockbusters in that prime 8 p.m. slot including Now You See Me (November 25th), Jurassic World (December 2nd), and Skyfall (December 9th). So, why would the studio out of nowhere take the call to step-down from such popular theatrical blockbusters to a 15-year-old made-for-TV political drama – especially one featuring controversial star Kevin Spacey as the lead.
Moreover, the above mentioned movies have a trend of being PG-13 rated which is perfect for families on a Saturday night after dinner, something that Barbie has in common. Recount is a mature political tale loaded with profanity and rated TV-MA (equivalent to an R rating). Extremely unfit in this slot. Following HBO’s listing, insiders are now expecting Barbie to begin streaming on Max on Friday, December 15th. Although, despite such overwhelming evidence take this as a speculation as official confirmation hasn’t come from the streamer.
The summer of 2023 had the Barbenheimer frenzy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally of $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years.
The film’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
