The Christopher Nolan directorial has earned $722 million by the end of its fifth weekend. This outstanding figure is thanks to Oppenheimer’s amazing performance in the international markets. Oppenheimer’s $722 million also means that the film is now Nolan’s 4th highest grosser ever beating Interstellar. Barbie on the other hand, has collected $1.28 billion worldwide and is on track to become the highest grossing film of 2023 beating out The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion). The contribution of both of these films is immense to cinema. They’ve just saved Hollywood by delivery one of the best summers since the pandemic. Check the figures below.

Barbie and Oppenheimer Have Saved Theatres And Cinema!

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the combines box office tally for North American titles this summer is closing in on $4 billion for the first time since 2019. One of the big reasons behind this achievement is Barbenheimer. Before Barbie and Oppenheimer premiered on Jul. 21, summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $3.797 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally.

Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years. Speaking about the race to $4 billion, Comscore chief box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “We still have two weekends left, including the long Labor Day weekend holiday. It would be a fantastic result for the industry. If you didn’t have Barbenheimer to make up for the shortfall of other films that didn’t live up to expectations, we’d be looking at a very different summer.”

The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $185 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.

Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
