Barbenheimer has taken the world by storm. Oppenheimer is making history at the box office as the Nolan directorial has earned $425.3 million worldwide including $194 million domestic – $46.6 million of which was grossed over its second weekend. Oppenheimer has also became the first R-rated film to earn $10 million daily domestically for straight seven days. Now the streak is at ten days. The Nolan blockbuster collected $82 million domestically and $180 million worldwide, proving the early projections wrong. Oppenheimer broke the IMAX record as it earned $35 million on debut with 740 worldwide screens, making up 20% of total ticket sales – the biggest share ever. Speaking of Barbie, the Greta Gerwig summer blockbuster got to $823.8 million till yesterday.
Barbie maintained its #1 spot at the box office, followed by Oppenheimer. As I predicted last week, Barbie is on path to become the second film of 2023 to breach the $1 billion mark. There is a real possibility that Barbie becomes the highest grossing film of 2023, beating out The Super Mario Bros. ($1.35 billion) but for that Barbie needs to continue to do well. So, how does the third weekend look like for Barbenheimer?
Barbie vs Oppenheimer: Barbie Still At The Top!
Despite having two new releases this weekend, Barbie and Oppenheimer are unshakable from the box office throne. Barbie continues to remain #1 while Oppenheimer follows up at #2 three weeks in a row. First up, the two new releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench are on track for a $28.8 million and $23.4 million opening weekend respectively. Barbie is predicted to collect $62.5 million over its third weekend and Oppenheimer comes in easily at $30.2 million.
These are of course the domestic figures. Combining these with the international collections Barbie will easily cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Oppenheimer might touch $500 million if it continues its strong hold overseas. Reports suggests it will. Haunted Mansion will collect around $11 million continuing its disappointing theatrical run. Overall, the third weekend for Barbenheimer looks like a busy affair. Make sure to be at the movies this weekend with your family and friends.
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.
Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
