The recent cancelling of the DC ‘s Batgirl film has raised many questions about the planning of the DCEU. Especially because the film costed about $90 Million to make and was already done filming. It was in its late editing stages when Warner Bros. had a pre-screening for it and the audience did not appreciate what they saw. In the announcement of cancelling the film, Warner Bros. gave the reason that the film wasn’t up to the industry standard. I mean for a film that costed $90 Million to make and had Leslie Grace in the lead role along with Michael Keaton, JK Simmons and Brendan Fraser. I don’t know how the film could’ve been so bad that Warner Bros. didn’t release it on any platform. The film was penned by Christina Hodson and helmed by Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi. Amidst this controversy Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav has given us a clarification.
CEO Zaslav says DC & HBO are following the MCU template!
David Zaslav cleared the air about the cancelling of the Batgirl movie by saying that they’ve reset their cinematic universe and have a 10 year plan similar to Marvel. This is how they’re planning to manage their funds in a better way and avoid box office bombs like their previous films. Especially after their merger with Discovery. In Zaslav’s exact words, “build a long-term, much stronger sustainable growth business out of DC.”
He further added, “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the business where we’re going to focus, where there will be a team with a ten-year plan focusing just on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney.”
He addressed the cancelling of the Batgirl film and gave a somewhat preachy explanation, “We’re not going to release any film before it’s ready. We’re not going to release a film to make a quarter, we’re not going to release a film — the focus is going to be ‘how do we make each of these films, in general, as good as possible?’”
One thing is clear that whatever’s Warner Bros. and Discovery’s their upcoming films like Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Black Adam and Joker 2 they’re all part of their 10 year plan. Zaslav said, “We’ve seen them. We think they’re terrific, and we think we can make them even better.” Here’s the latest teaser of Joker 2 that confirms Joaquin Phoenix will be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga would feature in the film as Harley Quinn.
DCEU’s next film Black Adam will releasing in theatres on 21st October 2022.
