Dune is Frank Herbert’s magnum opus- the novel came out in 1964 and it was an instant classic. After Asimov’s Foundation series this was one of the most pivotal moments in the history of sci-fi writing. Dune was such a hit that it led to 5 more books from Herbert but after his death, there were another two books from his son Brian Herbert. I am talking about the main Dune story, there were many other prequels and spin-offs in the Dune universe. Dune was so influential that it inspired George Lucas and George R.R. Martin to create Star Wars and A Song of Ice and Fire respectively. Having read the Sci-Fi masterpiece, I can tell you that the novel’s worldbuilding, lore and characters are simply unparalleled. I have never read anything that comes to close to Dune. The novel was widely considered unfilmable for a longtime and David Lynch’s 1984’s adaptation didn’t change that notion.
No one touched Dune for another 34 years until Warner Bros. decided to commission Herbert’s juggernaut to Hollywood’s new darling- Denis Villeneuve. Seeing Villeneuve’s filmography I have no doubt that there was no one better than him to helm Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece. Villeneuve assembled an outstanding cast with Timothee Chalamet in the lead as Paul Atreides along with Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Fergurson, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem. The film was co-written by Denis Villeneuve along with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. Villeneuve considering the scale and the amount the first novel encompasses took a very important creative call- he decided to split the first book into two movies. That was a brilliant decision. After many delays, Dune finally released in 2021 and what a film it was. In my opinion, it was the best film 2021 had to offer. The ending rendered me craving for more. Thankfully, the second part was coming soon and according to the latest update, the second part is coming out sooner.
Dune 2 Fills in for Marvel’s Blade’s Release Date!
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Dune 2 or Dune: Part Two will arrive two weeks before the previous release date of 17th November 2023 that is the same date when Marvel’s Blade reboot was supposed to release but after Marvel pushed it back due their director crisis, HBO might’ve thought of exploiting the two weeks as there are no major releases. Along with the second part, there is also a spin-off show about the Bene Gesserit under development at HBO Max. Denis Villeneuve had previously talked about the possibility of a third film.
The Arrival director said, “Now I could envision a third movie and to make the adaptation of Dune Messiah that will complete Paul Atreides’ story that I think would make sense,” the director said earlier this year. “But each movie, those movies are monsters, and I can only do one at a time. If I survive Dune: Part Two, then I might do the Messiah.” Villeneuve added, “When I start to think about that, I get tired. It’s too much. I need to focus on one project at a time, to be honest. But Part Three will be… I’m making sure that Part Three will be doable.”
Dune 2 adds even more faces into the fold, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV and Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot. Dune: Part One is available for streaming on HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video depending on the region where you live. Dune: Part Two premieres exclusively in theaters on Nov. 3, 2023.
