Dune 2 is unarguably the most successful film of 2024 as it had a dream run at the box office as well as with the critics. Even a huge Dune fan like me didn’t expect such a massive turnout for the Denis Villeneuve sequel. As everyone expected, the film was a visual delight. If this is not cinema then I don’t know what is. A film of such a massive scale can only be helmed by a once in a generation talent like Denis Villeneuve. You thought Christopher Nolan was the master of sci-fi? Check out Villeneuve’s filmography, you’d be amazed. If you’ve watched Dune 2 in theatres but still want to watch it repeatedly then don’t worry, I’ve found out the online release date of the sequel.
Dune 2 Digital Streaming Release Date Revealed!
When To Stream reveals that Dune 2 will be available for purchase or rent on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple iTunes and Amazon Prime Video from April 2nd, 2024. This gives the sequel the an exclusive theatrical runtime of 32 days. This theatre-to-digital window is line with other Warner Bros. releases after the pandemic. For reference, here are some recent Warner Bros. movies and their respective theater-to-digital windows:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17th, 2023 – April 7th, 2023 (21 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21st, 2023 – May 9th, 2023 (18 days)
- The Flash: June 16th, 2023 – July 18th, 2023 (33 days)
- Barbie: July 21st, 2023 – September 12th, 2023 (53 days) Exception – $1.44 billion
- Blue Beetle: August 18th, 2023 – September 26th, 2023 (39 days)
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: December 22nd, 2023 – January 23rd, 2023 (32 days)
A few days after Dune 2’s release, another reputed site for online release dates – dvdreleasedates revealed that Warner Bros. is eyeing April 16th for the film’s digital debut. This would’ve given Dune 2 theatre-to-digital window of 46 days and put it in an exclusive club with Barbie of having more than 40 days of exclusive theatre time despite being a Warner Bros. production.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. My guess is that April 16th was the original plan but considering Dune 2’s low returns at the box office, Warner Bros. decided to fastrack its online debut.
Don’t get me wrong, Dune 2 is a box office hit for sure. The film has minted good numbers – $626 million worldwide against a budget of $190 million. Still, it is unlikely that the film will continue to do extraordinary business given the tough competition from Kung Fu Panda 4, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Warner Bros’ own Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire that has opened up to a jaw dropping $194 million. So, keeping in mind all the above points. Warner Bros. have decided to make Dune 2 available to the audience two weeks earlier.
It also comes as Dune 2 was listed for a May 14th, 2024 release on Blu-ray, which would be 74 days after its theatrical debut date if accurate.
Dune 2 adds even more faces into the fold, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot and Anya Taylor Joy as Alia Atreides. Dune: Part One is available for streaming on HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video depending on the region where you live.
