Dune 2 is the most anticipated film of 2024 for me, I just hope it also turns out to be the best film of the year, unlike what happened last year with Oppenheimer. However, I highly doubt that after what I saw with Dune: Part One, Denis Villeneuve would mess up the best part of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterpiece novel. Adding to my point, if you have even glanced at the sequel’s reviews then you know they’re magnificent. The Timothée Chalamet starrer has an outrageous 98% Rotten Tomatoes score from 132 reviews. I mean you rarely see a big studio blockbuster movie have such critical appraisal. However, Dune 2 is not any film, it is an once in a generation experience. You’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t catch the film in theatres. Although, if you’re interested to watch the film at home then you might’ve to wait for a while.
Dune 2 Won’t Be Debuting Online Anytime Soon!
Before I make any predictions, I’m obligated to add that since Dune: Part Two is a Warner Bros. presentation. This makes things very difficult for me to predict a specific online release window for the sequel. Here are some recent Warner Bros. movies and their respective theater-to-digital windows:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17, 2023 – April 7, 2023 (21 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21, 2023 – May 9, 2023 (18 days)
- The Flash: June 16, 2023 – July 18, 2023 (33 days)
- Barbie: July 21, 2023 – September 12, 2023 (53 days)
- Blue Beetle: August 18, 2023 – September 26, 2023 (39 days)
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: December 22, 2023 – January 23, 2023 (32 days)
The recent box office projections for Dune: Part Two forecast a $60-$80 million domestic opening. These numbers foretell a massive run at the box office for the Denis Villeneuve directorial. Due to those presale numbers coupled with the movie’s critical praise, it is only logical that Warner Bros. will adapt a similar approach to Barbie in terms of how long it will be exclusively playing in theaters.
If my prediction holds true then, Dune 2 will have a theatre to online release window of 53 days, meaning it would debut on online platforms from April 23rd, 2024. Obviously, fans can give or take a few days from that date, but late April is likely when it will be made available online. This release date is also in line with David Zaslav’s brief update on the Dune: Part 2 streaming release date. At Warner Brothers Q4 earnings call, Zaslav said that Dune 2 is expected on Max in the Spring of 2024.
Dune 2 adds even more faces into the fold, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot and Anya Taylor Joy as Alia Atreides. Dune: Part One is available for streaming on HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video depending on the region where you live.
Dune: Part Two will now exclusively premiere in theatres on March 1st, 2024.
