One of the most anticipated movies of 2023, Dune 2 will now release in 2024. Denis Villeneuve’s film will have a six-week IMAX run, indicating a good change in the industry. Dune has proven its lucrative nature with a massive hit at the box office and earning 20% of the profit through IMAX alone. The notable part of it is that the movie was released in 2021 when viewers were still contemplating going out. Now, without any pandemic setbacks and a long IMAX run, Dun: Part Two will certainly be an even bigger box-office hit. This indicates that IMAX is not just for Disney and superheroes.
James Gunn, in a podcast program Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, talked about theater. He said the film should be more about the story and less about the capitalization of the superhero genre. It should answer, “What makes this story different that it fills a need for people in theaters to go see?” The mid-pandemic gross income of Dune answers this question very well. IMAX favoring a sci-fi movie like Dune instead of conventional superhero films indicates change. This change creates space for other genres, not just action and superheroes. Gelfond explains that the 2023 IMAx slate will contain more local-language films. Even though Dune 2 is an English movie, it still opens the door for other genres. This change is for the better and will impact the industry positively.
Fans Are Disappointed with the Delay
With Marvel’s next theatrical release, The Marvels, right after a week, there was conjecture about a possible delay. However, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond confirmed that there won’t be any delay. “Dune [Part Two] is already in the midst of a marketing campaign. There are trailers out there. There are lots of materials out,” he said. He elaborates that a postponement of the project will cost more. But now looking at the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the date has been pushed back.
The news has left the Dune fans disappointed. Due to the ongoing actors and writers strike, the cast won’t be able to engage in the promotional activities. So, viewing the negative effect of the ongoing strike, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. pushed the release date. Dune 2 will now hit the theatres globally on March 15, 2024.
