Dune 2 is having a dream run at the box office as well as with the critics. Even a huge Dune fan like me didn’t expect such a massive turnout for the Denis Villeneuve sequel. As everyone has told you, the film is a visual delight. In fact, it is a delight to all your senses. If this is not cinema then I don’t know what is. A film of such a massive scale can only be helmed by a once in a generation talent like Denis Villeneuve. You thought Christopher Nolan was the master of sci-fi? Check out Villeneuve’s filmography, you’d be amazed. If you’ve just stepped out of Dune 2 and wondered when you can witness the spectacle again then I’ve found out the online release date of the sequel.
Dune 2 Digital Streaming Release Date Revealed!
According to a new listing on dvdreleasedates, Dune 2 will be available for purchase or rent on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple iTunes and Amazon Prime Video from April 16th, 2024. This gives the sequel the an exclusive theatrical runtime of 46 days. Given that this a Warner Bros. production, a 46 days theatre to digital window is huge.
For reference, here are some recent Warner Bros. movies and their respective theater-to-digital windows:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17, 2023 – April 7, 2023 (21 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21, 2023 – May 9, 2023 (18 days)
- The Flash: June 16, 2023 – July 18, 2023 (33 days)
- Barbie: July 21, 2023 – September 12, 2023 (53 days)
- Blue Beetle: August 18, 2023 – September 26, 2023 (39 days)
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: December 22, 2023 – January 23, 2023 (32 days)
Given Dune 2’s amazing critical reception and a $178.5 million opening weekend, it makes sense for the studio to put so much trust in the Denis Villeneuve directorial. These numbers foretell a massive run at the box office. It is only logical that Warner Bros. will adapt a similar approach to Barbie in terms of how long it will be exclusively playing in theaters – 53 days.
It is still early days in the film’s release. If Dune 2 performs exceedingly well as Barbie did, then it is inevitable that Warner Bros. will delay its online release date. This release date is also in line with David Zaslav’s brief update on the Dune: Part 2 streaming release date. At Warner Brothers Q4 earnings call, Zaslav said that Dune 2 is expected on Max in the Spring of 2024.
Dune 2 adds even more faces into the fold, including Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Christopher Walken as Shaddam IV, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot and Anya Taylor Joy as Alia Atreides. Dune: Part One is available for streaming on HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video depending on the region where you live.
