Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the hottest film on the planet right now. Even if purists spew hate about these films, it is an undeniable fact that there is a huge section of the audience that is interested in these monster vs monster actioners. These colossal beings have existed in cinema for decades and their americanization has only skyrocketed their popularity. The New Empire is releasing at the perfect time as there is not enough competition around it but there is enough yearning for a big screen spectacle, especially after Dune 2’s success. Don’t let the mediocre critical reception fool you, Godzilla x Kong is a solid film and its massive box office opening is a testament of the same.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Storms To $200 Million
That day is finally here when we can conclude whether all the hype about Godzilla x Kong has resulted into the big bucks that the movie is in desperate need of. As it turns out, it has. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has opened to an extraordinary $194 million worldwide (domestic – $80 million, international – $114 million). Meaning it is 2024’s highest opening weekend yet, beating Dune 2’s $178.5 million.
What’s even more surprising is that the Monsterverse sequel is already the seventh highest grossing film of 2024, in a list consisting of Kung Fu Panda 4 and led by Dune: Part Two. If the Adam Wingard directorial capitalizes on this momentum then it is only a matter of time before it tops the list, given the lack of competition in April.
The international markets must be credited for the film’s extraordinary numbers. Releasing simultaneously in 64 international markets, The New Empire grossed $114 million. The film outdid itself in three major markets – China ($44 million), Mexico ($12.8 million) and India ($5.5 million). These numbers have rendered Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as the best opener (worldwide) in the Monsterverse franchise but the best domestic opener of the franchise still remains to be 2014’s Godzilla with $93 million.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is directed by Adam Wingard and has a reported production budget of $135 million. The film stars regulars of the Monsterverse franchise like Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens.
