After a disappointing first two months for movies, 2024 is really coming into its own with blockbuster movies back to back. It all began with Dune: Part Two and the carnage that that film brought at the box office was unimaginable. This was soon followed by Kung Fu Panda 4 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Just when we thought that the box office is thinning away here comes another box office juggernaut in the form of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. I’m sure you’re excited to watch the film in theatres and be mesmerized by the outstanding visuals and action sequences but today we’ve found out the online release date of the Monsterverse sequel. When Will Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Release Online?
According to a new listing on dvdreleasedates, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be available for purchase or rent on digital and VOD platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple iTunes, etc. from May 14th, 2024. This means Warner Bros. is planning a 46 day theatre to digital window for the Adam Wingard directorial.
I was mighty surprised with this online release date because Warner Bros. as a studio is highly impatient when it comes to digital debuts of its productions. The only two films that have escaped their wrath were Dune: Part Two and Barbie, who had a theatre to digital windows of 46 days and 53 days respectively. I’m obligated to add that Barbie was the highest grossing movie of 2023 ($1.44 billion) and Dune: Part Two is also a box office juggernaut that has grossed $581.5 million* against a budget of $190 million until now.

- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17, 2023 – April 7, 2023 (21 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21, 2023 – May 9, 2023 (18 days)
- The Flash: June 16, 2023 – July 18, 2023 (33 days)
- Barbie: July 21, 2023 – September 12, 2023 (53 days)
- Blue Beetle: August 18, 2023 – September 26, 2023 (39 days)
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: December 22, 2023 – January 23, 2023 (32 days)
Given that Godzilla x Kong hasn’t opened up to great critical reception (Rotten Tomatoes score: 54% from 128 reviews though an audience score of 93% & IMDb rating: 6.7/10) and mediocre commercial success with a tracking of $74 million (domestic), this online release date comes as a great surprise to me. This means Warner Bros. is grouping Godzilla x Kong with the likes of Dune: Part Two and Barbie. I hope the film lives up to the expectations of the studio otherwise we would definitely see a preponement of its digital debut.
