Gran Turismo is the newest movie from Sony which is based on a game of the same name. The movie severely deviated away from the source material as the movie told the story of Jann Madenborough who became a race car driver by playing Gran Turismo video games. As the film is based on a true story the Gran Turismo movie is unique in that’s both a biographical tale and a video game adaptation. After great first reactions, the later reviews made it clear that the film is nothing special. This summer was filled with huge blockbusters making 2023 one of the best years for cinema ever. However, the Gran Turismo movie hasn’t really secured an audience for itself as the film made in $60 million, only grossed $103 million globally. The film needs to earn some more at least to break even. Well, I’m guessing Sony doesn’t believe that is going to happen which is why we have gotten the online release date for the film.
Gran Turismo Is Racing Home Fast!
Sony officially revealed Gran Turismo’s online release date following the film’s disappointing box office run. A new listing from Sony confirmed that Neil Blomkamp’s racing epic will be released online on Tuesday, September 26. Unfortunately, the premium video on demand release date comes just 32 days after the film’s debut in theatres on 25th August (having released several weeks earlier internationally). However, this theatre to P-VOD window is fairly typical.
For comparison here are Sony Pictures’ latest releases and their distance between theatrical release and hitting PVOD:
- No Hard Feelings – 53 days
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – 46 days
- The Pope’s Exorcist – 27 days
- Big George Foreman – 19 days
- 65 – 28 days
The movie stars Darren Barnet, David Harbour, Djimin Hounsou, Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom and Gari Halliwell. The film is directed by Neil Blomkamp with a screenplay from Jason Hall, Zach Baylin and Alex Tse. Gran Turismo will release in theatres near you on 11th August 2023.
