Pathaan

Pathaan is the new film from the YRF Spy Universe which is written and directed by Siddharth Anand the same guy who directed War. The film stars Shahrukh Khan in the titular role and the supporting cast includes Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. India has been getting some recognition from the west due to the recent explosion of S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR in the US. The film scored one Golden Globes and two Critics Choice Awards wins while also securing an Oscar nomination. The appreciation for the Indian form of storytelling is being accepted and considering this craze of RRR, the most recent blockbuster from the Indian circuit is also exploding in the west as the box office numbers of the films are off the charts.

Pathaan marks the fourth on screen collaboration of Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s hit pair after starring in Chennai Express, Happy New Year and Om Shanti Om. After being released on 25th January 2023, a non-holiday- Pathaan has been unstoppable at the box office. It has almost become the Avatar: The Way of Water at the Indian box office. According to Deadline, Pathaan has broken Bollywood’s worldwide record for biggest opening. Moreover, the film is the first Hindi-language venture to cross 300 crores ($36.8 Million) globally.

Aside from big numbers, the film also has good reviews with over 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Pathaan has reportedly been made on a budget of 250 Crores. The film has already earned 400 crores worldwide in only 4 days. Seeing the unsurmountable success of the film it does raise the question whether the film will be the next RRR? It is very likely that the film will be met with the same warmth in the US and will have a great box office run, however, as it does not have any chartbusting song like Naatu Naatu from RRR, its success might be restricted to box office numbers and not awards.
