For someone who is not a big fan of action movies, it is a glaring contradiction to say that I love the John Wick franchise. Well, it is okay. We all have complexities and layers. Honestly, I happened to like the only the third film from the franchise. The first film is good but it is not that action heavy and I didn’t feel the action. Like my favorite action films are the one where I feel the action in my gut. For example- Oldboy and Nobody. That kind of feeling and thrill was only provided by chapter three and I absolutely loved it. In my opinion, the second chapter is the weakest installment of the franchise. Keanu Reeves is awesome in all of them though. If I were to make a list of my most anticipated films of 2023, John Wick 4 would definitely be part of it simply because how good three was.
The way the previous installment has ended also makes the upcoming movie extremely intriguing. The amazing teaser trailer for the film was released last year and since then the updates regarding the film have been sparse. That changes today as we have news about the film’s runtime and it is insanely long.
Chapter 4 is Longest John Wick Movie Yet!
Collider has revealed that John Wick Chapter 4 has an insane runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes. For reference, John Wick, the first installment in the franchise had a humble length of 1 hour 41 minutes. Chapter Two clocked in at 2 hours 2 minutes, increasing the length by 21 minutes. Parabellum was another 9 minutes longer with 2 hours and 11 minutes. Chapter Four takes after the franchise’s norm and increases the length but by more than half and hour. This is the biggest jump in the franchise so far.
Now, you might think that this the end of the franchise as it would be too long but franchise director Chad Stahelski has assured us that the increased runtime doesn’t make the latest movie boring, in fact it makes it more more interesting. This is what the director had to say in a previous interview, “Look, I’ve watched this thing now, this version of the cut, close to 100 times, and another 100 by the end of the month at least. And this is the first one that we watch. I don’t get bored at all. It’s my own film. I know it’s weird to say, but I watch it, and I was like, ‘Oh, I’m still in the movie.’ It doesn’t take me out. I don’t ever feel like, ‘Fuck, just end this thing already. I can’t watch it again.’ You know what I mean?”
Talking about John Wick, Stahelski further added, “Other than my other misgivings of choices, and scenes, and writing all that stuff, I feel pretty good about it. Keanu [Reeves] and I, and the really tight circle that I have around us, we’ve watched, every week. We have a little group. ‘Let’s just watch it one more time to make sure we’re not talking ourselves into something.’”
The director concluded with, “If I go with anybody else’s opinion other than mine, which I haven’t done in any other decision in the movie, where’s that going to go? I mean, we wrote a longer movie. We wrote a bigger movie. We wrote a longer script. We wrote at least a third more scenes than the last one. We expect it to be more. We’ve always expected it to be more. And I think the test, or at least what we’re judging ourselves by, is that worth it with how we executed what we want it to be more or not? And I think the answer’s yes.”
The Franchise stars Keanu Reeves in the lead role. The other cast includes Clancy Brown, Donnie Yen, Bill Skasrsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Rina Sawayama, Ian Mcshane, Lance Reddick and Laurence Fishburne. John Wick: Chapter 4 is slated to release to on 24th March 2023.
