Following nearly two full months of statements and testimony, the Depp v. Heard defamation trial concluded on Wednesday, June 1. Now that their bitter legal saga is over, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are left to rebuild their careers. It remains to be seen, though, how carefully they will decide to proceed and how eager Hollywood will be to hire them.
How The Trial Affected Johnny Depp ’s Career
While entering the trial, Depp boasted by far the more prominent career between the two exes, having collected more than $8 billion in worldwide box office grosses, courtesy of hits like the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, “Alice and Wonderland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
In his lawsuit against heard, Depp claimed he had lost tens of millions of dollars worth of professional profits due to her accusations, demanding $50 million in damages. In 2020, the actor lost the libel case against U.K. tabloid The Sun, which labelled him a “wife-beater” while reporting on his divorce from Heard. Warner Bros. removed Depp from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise shortly after the ruling. He has only acted in three low-budget movies since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” in 2018, none of which saw a significant domestic release.
Everything We Know About Johnny Depp ’s Next Movie
Depp is set to play King Louis XV (nicknamed ‘Louis The Beloved’) in the French period drama “Jeanne du Barry,” which was launched for pre-sales before potential distributors at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, marking the first narrative feature for the actor in more than three years.
A report confirmed previous speculations that Depp would star opposite actress and filmmaker Maïwenn, who will also direct the movie about Jeanne Bécu, a woman who rose through the ranks of the court of King Louis XV to become his mistress despite being born into poverty.
What Other Plans Does The Actor Have?
It has also been revealed that the star is collaborating with guitarist Jeff Beck for an album that will be released sometime in July. This won’t be the first time Depp has teamed up with Beck, as the two men previously worked together on a cover of the John Lennon song “Isolation.” They were also seen performing together with musician Sam Fender at a pub in Newcastle on Thursday evening, following the conclusion of the Depp v. Heard trial in Fairfax, Virginia.
Depp said in his statement afterwards that he was “truly humbled” that the jury had given him his life back and stated, “The best is yet to come, and a new chapter has finally begun.” Evidently, this album will be a part of that new chapter. Fans of Johnny Depp’s music only have to wait until next month before his album with Jeff Beck is released.
The actor is rumoured to be part of the cast for Beetlejuice 2, as fans had noticed that Depp’s name appeared on a call sheet when they searched for the upcoming Beetlejuice 2 on Google. Alongside Johnny are his ex-girlfriend Winona Ryder and original Beetlejuice star Michael Keaton who will be reliving their roles in the Tim Burton film. The film is set for release in 2025, which is quite a long wait, but it may be worth it.
All About Johnny Depp’s Most Recent Film And T.V. Work
The three-time Oscar nominee was last seen on the big screen in Minamata, the drama which had its U.S. release back in February 2019, featuring the actor/producer in the critically well-received role of American photographer W. Eugene Smith. The actor has described himself as a victim of cancel culture ever since.
Although Hollywood has held him at a distance, Depp still commands an intensely devoted fan base. At this year’s Academy Awards, Minamata (which garnered just $1.2 million worldwide) finished third in the Oscars fan-favourite category after ardent Depp supporters cast a massive number of votes for the actor via Twitter.
Depp currently lends his voice to a cartoon puffin on an international animated series called “Puffins Impossible”.
