Warner Bros. is not having a good year at the box office. Their biggest investments of the year so far have turned out to be rotten eggs (in terms of box office collections)- Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash and Blue Beetle. Their box office success this year is short lived, except, for Barbie- the film that is on track to become the highest grossing film of the year. Along with Barbie, another unexpected film is performing well at the box office for the studio. Meg 2: The Trench has stormed past the $300 million milestone worldwide, with over $250 million. China alone has contributed $90 million thus far reflecting the popularity of these films in the region. Just like it’s predecessor, Meg 2 is made on a budget of $130 million and has to make $400 million to break even. If current market trends are to believed then this shouldn’t be a difficult task. However, it seems like Warner Bros. is not interested to give the film that chance as the studio has already announced Meg 2′ online release date.
Meg 2 Gets An Instant Online Release!
Meg 2: The Trench’s online release date was announced by Warner Bros. via WhenToStream. The film will be available to purchase online on Friday, August 25. That equates to a tight 21-day theatrically exclusive window for the shark sequel. This aggresive theatre to digital strategy of Warner Bros. is getting to my nerves now. First they did it with Barbie and now Meg 2. Why is the studio hellbent on not giving films theatre time? I can understand for flops but Meg 2 had the potential to break even but the studio has taken this chance away from the film. Also, fans can expect Meg 2 to hit the streamer (Max) 60-70 days after hitting theaters.
Along with Jason Statham the film stars Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai and Sienna Guillory. The sequel is directed by Ben Wheatley with the screenplay from Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris, based on the 1999 novel The Trench by Steve Alten.
