We all know the stature of Stephen King when it comes to horror. He is often referred to as the “King of Horror”. There have been many adaptations of his books and if done well, they’ve been huge box office successes. The It franchise along with Doctor Sleep and The Shining are glowing examples of it. Mike Flanagan is one of the most influential horror directors of this generation. Like any true horror fan, he loves Stephen King’s books and have adapted two of them (Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep) before. Considering the critical success that the previous two adaptations have had, it is only natural that he adapts more of King’s work and it looks like the talented filmmaker is doing just that. Flanagan has wrapped filming on another of his Stephen King adaptation called The Life of Chuck.
The Life of Chuck: Flanagan Shares His Personal Attachment To The Project!
The Life of Chuck is one of King’s recent works. The short story focuses on “Chuck” Krantz played by Tom Hiddleston, whose life we see in reverse chronological order. The story starts with Chuck dying of a brain tumor at 39, then backward to living in a supposedly haunted house. Mark Hamill, who joined Flanagan with Usher, will play Albie. Despite being a new story, this narrative clearly dear to Mike Flanagan as he wrapped filming for the film, he wrote an extremely emotional letter to the cast and crew.
In a series of posts on X (previously knowns as Twitter), Flanagan thanked his team, “That’s a wrap on THE LIFE OF CHUCK. This has been a tenacious little miracle of a movie from the start & I’m forever indebted to this wonderful cast and crew. This film is deeply special to me, and I’m elated that it’s going to exist in the world.”
He further added, “It’s been a long time since I made something truly independent & it fed my soul to be back in the indie world where I started – especially here in Alabama, where we shot OCULUS, BEFORE I WAKE, HUSH and GERALD’S GAME.”
The filmmaker expressed his gratitude, “THE LIFE OF CHUCK is the movie I want to leave in the world for my kids, & I’m so grateful to Trevor Macy @IntrepidPix, @QWGmire & @filmnation for making it happen. And many thanks of course to @StephenKing for trusting me with this beautiful, fragile, joyful story.”
He concluded with his final tweet, “Now I’m back to LA to edit (cannot wait), and start the long road of expectation setting that THE LIFE OF CHUCK isn’t a horror movie. Profound thanks to the cast & crew, & to Foley, Fairhope, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Bay Minette, and Mobile for your hospitality. That’s a wrap!”
The Life of Chuck doesn’t have a release date at the time of writing, though, it is speculated to have a late 2024 or early 2025 release.
