The Mission: Impossible film series has toppled the $4 billion mark in overall ticket sales after adding Mission Impossible 7’s worldwide tally of $566 million. The total gross for the Mission: Impossible franchise stands at $4.268 billion since its inception with the original 1996 movie. After breaching the $550 million mark, Dead Reckoning Part One has become the fourth-highest-earning film of the seven installments released to date. Mission Impossible 7 is well behind 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout which earned $791 million worldwide, setting a new franchise record. Domestically, MI 7 has performed worse sitting sixth among Mission: Impossible’s seven entries at $168 million, only above 2006’s Mission: Impossible III.
Even after collecting a decent amount at the box office, Mission Impossible 7 is not a box office success because the film was made on a staggering budget of $291 million. If reports are to believed, it might have suffered a staggering loss of $40 million. However, as Paramount won the lawsuit against their insurer Chubb they were awarded a sum of $71 million because of the delay in production between February 2020 and June 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic across the world and the filming restrictions that came along with it. As the film has now broken even, Paramount has announced the digital release date for the Tom Cruise starrer.
Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part 1 Gets Digital Release Date!
IGN reports that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will be available to purchase on digital platforms starting October 10. Also, for fans who are interested in a physical copy, they’ll be happy to know that Mission Impossible 7 will hit storefronts on October 31st in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Its online release date is 90 days after opening in theaters on July 12. This is in line with Paramount’s massive hit Top Gun: Maverick loses its theater exclusivity 88 days after opening.
We don’t have an official update on when will the film be available for streaming but if Paramount continues to treat MI 7 as Top Gun: Maverick then the film should follow a similar streaming trajectory. Maverick came to Paramount’s streaming service in December 2022, 209 days after its initial theatrical release. While Maverick can be counted as an exception because of its unsurmountable box office success, something which Mission Impossible 7 will most likely not enjoy. Although, if Paramount chooses to adopt a similar strategy for the film then, MI 7 will debut on February 6, 2024.
Aside from Maverick, the studio has followed a much harsher release plan to many of its other major blockbuster films from the 2022 or so. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (46 days), Scream 6 (50 days), and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (46 days), all enjoyed much shorter exclusive theatrical windows than Maverick. If Dead Reckoning were to fall amongst them then the streaming release would be somewhere around 50 days after its big screen debut, around August 31. While these are two extremes of the release spectrum, I think the much more likely release window is November or December. Given the ongoing shift in streaming strategy across Hollywood.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales and Vanessa Kirby. MI 7 is playing in theatres near you and Dead Reckoning Part Two is slated to release on 28th June 2024.
