Napoleon is Ridley Scott’s 28th feature film in a career spanning over 60 years. The great man has been active in Hollywood since 1963. Scott specializes in the genres like historical drama, science fiction and crime. His two films that are often brought up cinephiles are Blade Runner and Gladiator. In fact his recent films like The Last Duel and House of Gucci were excellent as well. So, when it was announced that Scott was making a biopic on Napoleon Bonaparte, the great and controversial French general, fans thought it would be his best film yet. Well… it wasn’t. The film boasted scenic locations and beautiful cinematography with intricate costumes and production design, but where the film fell short (pun intended) was the screenplay and its inaccurate character treatment.
Even a performer like Joaquin Phoenix couldn’t save Scott’s latest. The film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 58% and an IMDb score of 6.6/10. Made on a colossal budget of $200 million, the Ridley Scott directorial only earned $206.9 million worldwide. It didn’t even break even. However, as the film was in collaboration with Apple TV+, its box office performance doesn’t matter much. If you skipped the film in theatres, after reading the mediocre reviews but wish to watch it now, then we have some good news for you.
When Will Napoleon Release Online on Digital Platforms?
When To Stream reveals that Napoleon will be available for purchase on digital and VOD platforms like Apple iTunes, Vudu and Amazon Prime Video from January 9th, 2024. One has to note that Apple has not confirmed this date. This digital release date would mark 48 days since Napoleon came to theaters, which is fairly in line with other Apple Originals. Apple’s other big theatrical movie of 2023, Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese, was released digitally after a mere 46 days after its big-screen debut.
Take this release date with a grain of salt as except for When To Stream, no other reliable website has confirmed this released. For now, we don’t have any other information on Napoleon like its physical media release date or even its streaming debut. Dvdreleases, one of the most reliable sites for online and physical media release dates, estimates that Napoleon’s online, DVD and Blu-ray releases would take place in February 2024. One has to wait and watch as this information will prove itself legitimate or illegitimate.
Napoleon is helmed by Ridley Scott and penned down by David Scarpa. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role and Vanessa Kirby as Empress Jose. The supporting cast includes Edouard Philipponnat, Anna Mawn, Youssef Kerkour and Matthew Needham.
