Nope is the new Jordan Peele film. The American actor, comedian, writer and director has previously stunned us with his directorial debut horror film- Get Out. The psychological horror film blew everyone’s minds away with its engaging screenplay, powerful performances and the the deeper themes imbedded in the story that elevate the quality of the film. Peele is known for always including social demons like racism in his films that act as theme to connect with the audience on a deeper level so as not to wander around the surface anymore. Even if he displays societal issues in his films that act as observational horror, he makes sure to give audiences actual horror that satisfies on the promise that his films promise. Not simply lecturing audiences about the wrongdoings of our ancestors. His next venture called Us (2019) was no different.
Peele dialed up the horror and fantasy element in this film although keeping his remarkable style intact. The film had incredible performances from Lupita Nyong’o that started Oscar buzz. Although, the Academy was too ignorant to consider her for Best Actress even if it was one of the best performances of that year. However, the academy did recognize Peele’s brilliance as they awarded him Best Original Screenplay Award for Get Out. Naturally after giving audiences back to back hits, Peele’s next film was highly anticipated- Nope. While I was skeptical of Nope because every other film I was excited this year has thoroughly disappointed me, I didn’t want Nope to be the same. However, today we have the first set of reviews for Nope and they give an idea on whether Jordan Peele’s 3rd film sticks the landing or is it another disappointing addition to this year’s films.
Nope Reviews: Jordan Peele has Outdone himself?
As the film is premiering for limited audiences today, we have our list of reviews for the film. The film is merely days from releasing across the world except for India where it is releasing on 19th August. That’s a bummer. Nope’s trailer hinted us at a Sci-Fi bloody ride. It looked remarkably different from his previous ventures. The film was also called the “Signs” of this generation, check it out here. If that is true then there is a Shyamalan twist hidden somewhere in the film.
A lot of reviewers have taken their thoughts to Twitter and provided us with a perspective to look at the film now. Here are the early reviews for Nope:
So #NopeMovie is absolutely phenomenal in so many ways. Perfectly blends together a sci-fi spectacle w/a story that is also something of a Hollywood reckoning & it blew my expectations away. Gorgeously shot, the sound mix is thunderous & the cast all shines. Love love loved it. pic.twitter.com/qdcZIvsX5T

Jordan Peele’s Nope is his most confident, unfettered, and potentially most divisive vision yet. Swapping the exclamation marks of horror for the question marks of sci-fi, this is less about scares. With hints of Close Encounters, Jaws, and more, #NopeMovie is a real puzzlebox. pic.twitter.com/Ny3EVaLTqW

Yep, I’ve seen #NOPEMOVIE. @JordanPeele makes it 3-for-3 with an intense sci-fi outing that incorporates Western genre sensibilities and an interesting narrative on respecting the animal kingdom. Also his funniest film to date. @KekePalmer’s Oscar campaign can start now! Wild!

#NopeMovie is a resounding YES. See it on the biggest screen you can find. A thrilling and strange spectacle unlike anything else out there. I'll never look at the sky the same way again.

Nope is nothing like what you’d expect. An entertaining head-scratcher, equal parts confusing and terrifying and, like most of the films by @JordanPeele, offers layers you likely won’t peel back in one sitting. (CONT’D) #NopeMovie pic.twitter.com/GwkHzqkynt

The most important thing you need to know about NOPE is it’s crazy different from Get Out & Us. This is Jordan Peele spreading his wings and making big budget Spielberg/esque sci-fi, but with the subtext you’d expect. Enter with an open mind and you’ll be rewarded. #NopeMovie

Jordan Peele’s #Nope is one of the best films I’ve watched this year! It’s frightening & ferocious, but also very funny & unlike any UFO movie you’ve ever seen. It is a wholly unique & VERY entertaining horror epic full of wild surprises & an unforgettable Keke Palmer performance pic.twitter.com/iua9HPt0RG

Surprisingly all the reviews of the film are incredibly positive, that’s reassuring. That means we can definitely expect one good film to release this year after a disappointing summer except for Top Gun: Maverick. Its worth noting, Maverick was the only film released this summer that had gotten such good reviews. Seeing how good that film turned out to be and its astounding Box Office run, we can certainly expect Nope to be brilliant.
Keke Palmer is getting unanimous praise for her performance in the film. People are starting Oscar buzz for her. Although, I don’t expect the Academy to be open minded enough to consider her. The reviews do mention something I’d predicted, the film looks remarkably different than Peele’s previous ventures. The film is a horror film but its more like a sci-fi horror rather than Peele’s previous films. Regardless, I’m excited for this film and I hope it turns to be as good as everyone is making it out to be.
