Not Okay is a new 2022 film directed by Quinn Shephard. The film’s premise revolves around a misguided young woman who is desperate for fame friends. She fakes a trip to Paris to update her Social Media presence but a terrible incident that happens in the real world bleeds into her fake trip and gives her everything she wanted. Not Okay stars Zoey Deutch in the lead role and the other cast includes- Dylan O’Brien, Mia Isaac, Embeth Davidtz, Karan Soni, Brennan Brown, Nadia Alexander, Tia Dionne Hodge, Negin Farsad, Sarah Yarkin , Dash Perry , Caroline Calloway, Rocco Botte and Shawn Chatfield.
The film sounded like a satire on the modern age where we’re all glued to our mobiles and how we’ve materialized our deep seeded needs and vulnerabilities and equated them to social media apps to give us a false sense of calmness. This way we hide from our own emotions leading to we being unaware of ourselves and in turn hurting ourselves and others. While we’ve gotten few films that address this societal demon, its always nice to see another film in this fairly nascent genre. The first batch of reviews of Not Okay are out, which can tell us whether the film is worth going all the way to the theatres or not.
Not Okay Reviews: Mediocre?
Oh, look, some of my work at Thrillist, which probably won’t really be in heather review business anymore. Anyway, I really liked Quinn Shephard’s Not Okay, which is like if Dear Evan Hansen realized it’s protagonist was a piece of shit https://t.co/vx4RyLzYP5

"Not Okay" review: A giddily shallow Zoey Deutch is both victim and villain in Quinn Shephard's satire on the battle for online clout.https://t.co/G1t51qCXza

The satire “Not Okay” is ultimately more content to luxuriate in the toxic sludge of internet culture than it is to try and clean it up, our critic writes. https://t.co/ApEc0INHnE

Not Okay review – a just okay satire for the influencer age https://t.co/bP9hdjUpsJ

#NotOkayMovie is a fine & forgiving take on influencer culture, but its hardly satire… which makes me wonder: "What was the point?" Deutch gives an unchallenged performance, outshadowed by the simple script, maximalist aesthetic & her costar Mia Isaac.https://t.co/S3jL47qDqe

Didn't care much for NOT OKAY, a satire of follower-thirsty fame chasing that would have benefitted from a little more bite (or maybe, alternatively, a little less glib snark). My full review @RollingStone: https://t.co/91LRzUkNDY

The great @zoeydeutch gives a fearless performance as a young woman whose shocking lie turns her into an online pariah in the cancel culture comedy NOT OKAY. It debuts on @hulu this Friday.

I really dug Not Okay, which has Zoey Deutch again playing a character almost no one else could play (see also Buffaloed and Flower), to great effect. See out more in my rave @AwardsRadar: #NotOkay @NotOkayFilm @zoeydeutch #QuinnShepherd #NotOkayMoviehttps://t.co/jCLnsMxY8w

While Nit Okay may have not gotten the best reviews you’d have expected but no review mentions that the film is an absolute trash. From the reviews I can make out that the film may suffer from originality and simply look a derivative of previous films in this genre that were crafted better. Zoey Deutch is getting unanimous praise for her role in the film. I think the film will be a good one time watch with your friends but other than that the film doesn’t look like it casted a longing impression on any of the critics. So, I think the word play works very well, Not Okay is simply just okay.
Not Okay will release in theatres on 29th July 2022.
