Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $3.797 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years. The Christopher Nolan directorial alone has earned $722 million by the end of its fifth weekend. This outstanding figure is thanks to Oppenheimer’s amazing performance in the international markets.
Out of the $722 million, $436 million has come from outside the US and Canada. Despite having tough competition in markets like India, Oppenheimer has managed to collect a hefty sum. The Nolan blockbuster has crossed the ₹150 crore mark in India despite facing off box office juggernauts like Gadar 2, OMG 2, Jailer and Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Oppenheimer’s $722 million also means that the film is now Nolan’s 4th highest grosser ever beating Interstellar. However, the records don’t stop there. Oppenheimer just achieved another feat at the box office.
Oppenheimer Continues Its Glorious Box Office Run!
Collider reports that Oppenheimer slid into fifth on the all-time R-rated global box office list thanks to its total of $722.8 million worldwide, passing the 2017 horror blockbuster – It. After passing the $700 million mark this past weekend and reaching the top five, Oppenheimer is on track to beat Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Reloaded in 4th at $738 million. The top three places are owned by Deadpool ($781 million), Deadpool 2 ($786 million) and Joker ($1.066 billion).
Oppenheimer will have an uninterrupted IMAX run till the end of August. Also, the movie could further boost its box-office gross this weekend thanks to National Cinema Day on Aug. 27, where fans can cop discounted tickets to Oppenheimer and other summer blockbusters. There is no way Oppenheimer will surpass Joker (2019) in this list. However, the $800 million mark looks possible based on current market trends which means the film can become the 2nd highest r-rated film in box office history soon. Unfortunately, Oppenheimer won’t topple Inception’s $837.1 million lifetime collection.
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $185 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.
