Oppenheimer has opened at the box office with a massive $80.5 million from 3,610 American theatres. This is Nolan’s biggest non-IP opener and among the best for an R-rated biographical drama. The Christopher Nolan directorial really out did itself in the international markets as the film earned $93.7 million from 78 different territories for a massive $174.2 million global total. While Oppenheimer is behind Barbie in global cume but in many markets the film has trumped over Gerwig’s blockbuster. In India for instance, Oppenheimer collected rs. 49 crores over the weekend while Barbie grossed rs. 18.50 crores. While these figures are a huge achievement for the film, they’re not nearly enough to call it profitable yet. This is because of Oppenheimer’s massive budget $185 million (rs. 1517 crores+).
Huh, so much money for a biographical drama? Well, where did the money go? Most of it was of course dedicated to the technical department but the expansive cast did burn a pretty big hole in Universal’s pockets. Let’s see how much each actor charged for Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy Charged A Huge Sum To Play J. Robert Oppenheimer!
The lead actor of the film Cillian Murphy was reportedly paid a massive sum of $10 million (rs. 82 crores) for portraying J. Robert Oppenheimer. Other than Murphy, the cast had many other big names of Hollywood. Notably, Robert Downey Jr. who is known for being Marvel Studios’ Tony Stark or Iron Man. Downey portrayed Lewis Strauss and lowered his fees for Nolan. The actor only charged $4 million (rs. 32 crores). In his tenure has Iron Man, Downey was known for charging astronomical figures for his appearances.
Like $20 million (rs. 164 crores) or Avengers: Endgame or $40 million (rs. 328 crores) for Captain America: Civil War. Just like Downey, Matt Damon, who features in a supporting role of General Leslie Groves charged $3 million (rs. 24.6 crores). Much lower than his regular fees of $10 million. Emily Blunt, the third highest-paid Hollywood actress in 2022, after Margot Robbie and Millie Bobby Brown, exacted a sum of $4 million for her role of Kathrine Oppenheimer in the film.
Florence Pugh, one of the up and coming actresses in Hollywood earned $1 million (rs. 8.2 crores) from Nolan’s latest flick as she played Jean Tatlock. Despite having such an extravagant cast, Nolan didn’t have to burden under their regular gigantic fees as everyone made concessions out of respect for Christopher Nolan. I can understand. Who doesn’t want to be in a Christopher Nolan film?
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.
