The latest box office projections for Barbie and Oppenheimer put Barbie at earning $70 million to $80 million in its opening weekend. This is double the projected box office collection for Oppenheimer, which is expected to make around $40 million when it opens. Both films have a budget of around $100 million, though, even if Oppenheimer doesn’t outperform Barbie, they’re both likely to turn a profit by the end of their theatrical runs. If you asked anyone a year ago which film would be at the top, all of them would’ve said Oppenheimer. However, Barbie has truly become an internet sensation and there is genuine hype around the film. Well, Barbie might’ve beaten Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama at the box office but when it comes to critical reception, they’re not even close.
Oppenheimer First Review: Christopher Nolan’s Best Film?
The first review of Oppenheimer happens to be from one of the stars of the film – Benny Safdie. The actor shared this thoughts on his personal Instagram, he wrote, “I got to see the movie recently, and I can tell you with certainty: This is Chris’ best movie by far. It’s got everything firing on all cylinders.” Well, I know since Safdie appears in the film we can’t take his words without a pinch of salt but if we do believe him then Barbie and Oppenheimer’s first reviews are very different.
Barbie’s first review surfaced the Internet two days back and it didn’t call the film Gerwig’s best or a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the review was from a film critic who called the film fun but not perfect. Barbie’s review is from a much neutral source but then again Warner Bros. might’ve simply asked her write the review. Also, some early ratings of Barbie have given the film a mediocre score on the platform 6.6/10. That is not good. Generally films have much higher IMDb scores and they fall when the film opens to a wider audience.
For me, Memento is Nolan’s best film and even though Inception, The Prestige and The Dark Knight are brilliant, they pale in comparison to Memento. What Nolan achieved with his second feature film was so precious that even he is not able to beat it yet, however, he did come close a few times. So, if Oppenheimer is indeed Nolan’s best then I have to say we’re in for some movie in July. I’m planning to watch both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day so I just hope Barbie doesn’t disappoint me.
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $100 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Michael Angarano and without a doubt Michael Caine.
Oppenheimer will release in theatres near you on 21st July 2023.
