Earlier this year, we’d gotten a glimpse of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biopic Oppenheimer as a teaser trailer was released along with the first poster. The poster absolutely broke the internet. Since then months have passed where we have had no updates regarding the film, however, Universal did release the official IMAX trailer of the film alongside Avatar: The Way of Water exclusively in theatres. So, you could’ve only watched Oppenheimer’s trailer if you partake in James Cameron’s spectacle. However, that changes today as Universal Pictures have released the first official trailer of the film online for everyone to cherish. Watch it here.

Oppenheimer Brings Back A Device Used In Memento!

Oppenheimer trailer takes us back to the best film Nolan ever made in 2000. Memento where he used intercutting between Color and B/W as a device to cut between the past and present. Memento has always been a major influence on Nolan as all his films adopt something or the other from Memento and why not? Like Tenet took the concept of the bullet reversing back into the gun. This was used in Memento and the image was so powerful for Nolan that he made an entire film about it. Oppenheimer too has taken something from Memento.

The B/W and Color intercutting pattern that Nolan has used back then makes its return in Oppenheimer. Nolan had mentioned that he was always fond of this device and wanted to use it but couldn’t as his films didn’t allow it, however, Oppenheimer made that possible for Nolan. In a recent interview with Total Film Nolan said, “I very much loved the structural assistance and the aesthetic charge of shifting between color and black and white that I had on Memento. I’d always been looking for a reason to go back to that. And in the case of Oppenheimer and the way in which we tell this story, it’s very subjectively [told], but also with a more objective story strand that intertwines with that. It was really the perfect time to go back to that device that I loved so much.”

We see in the trailer that this device has made its return. The trailer is actually a lot different than the one we saw in theatres. According to the description provided by our sources, that trailer was much more epic and featured Robert Downey Jr.’s character while this trailer looks like a flip of it. This is an extremely grounded trailer that doesn’t show us much. I think the trailer shown in theatres would be the second trailer that will be released a month or two before the film’s release. Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer is a perfect casting.

We don’t see a lot of cast members in this trailer not even Emily Blunt. The film almost has the entire Hollywood in it. However, we have gotten glimpses of only a few of them. The visuals of the trailer as any other Nolan film are outstanding and extremely realistic, after all he did practically recreated a nuclear bomb testing. I mean I just want to see till what lengths Nolan goes in his persistence of use of practical effects. I’d like to place Cameron and Nolan in one room, one is a devout of practical effects and the other is a master of VFX.

The story of the film is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $100 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Michael Angarano and without a doubt Michael Caine.

Oppenheimer is set to release in theatres near you on 21st July 2023.
