I cannot believe Oppenheimer is only two days away. The film is truly an extraordinary achievement from Christopher Nolan. Of course I’ve not seen Mr. Nolan’s magnum opus but what I’m hearing about the film is truly fascinating. It is the first non-IP film to get 3 am shows in India. I mean if that is not hype then I don’t know what is. Nolan wrote a 180 page script and acquired a massive budget $185 million, apart from that Oppenheimer is the longest film to be shot in the IMAX format and I mean this the maximum. No film can go longer than this length on IMAX. This was custom made for Nolan. I also have an inkling that Oppenheimer will be the film that gets Nolan his long awaited and deserved Oscar.
However, I have decided to remain cautious and not get too excited as many films this year have been all bark and no bite (John Wick Chapter Four and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One). So, along with me if you’re wondering when will the embargo for Oppenheimer lift so that critics can share honest thoughts, then I’ve got you covered.
Oppenheimer: When Can Critics Share Their Honest Thoughts?
We’ve gotten the first reactions for Oppenheimer, and as usual they’re amazing. However, these are pre embargo reviews which means critics can’t share their honest or at least their complete opinion. They can’t discuss certain plot points as then they would be considered spoilers. Critics are barred by studios until a certain a date before talk freely about the film in question. Oppenheimer’s media embargo will lift up on 19th July 2023 at noon ET. One day later Barbie’s embargo was lifted. Interestingly, the first reactions of both films dropped a day apart as well. With Barbie being the first one.
This means if you’re in the US then critic reviews of Oppenheimer will be available to read from noon today (4.03 am right now). If you’re in India then you can sleep tonight as the reviews would most likely drop tomorrow morning. Barbie’s reviews dropped this morning and it looks like Greta Gerwig’s summer blockbuster will give Oppenheimer a tough competition in quality. It will be fun to see who wins the box office and awards race, especially if both movies are as good as we’re led to believe.
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $185 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Michael Angarano and without a doubt Michael Caine.
The World Changes Forever on 21st July 2023.
