After nearly two decades of waiting, the beloved buddy-cop franchise is getting a new chapter. The folks at Paramount Pictures have given Rush Hour 4 the green light. The reason behind this sudden resurrection? Reportedly, a push from Donald Trump. Yes, you read that right. Trump apparently lobbied Paramount (via his connection with a top stakeholder) to bring back the fun-filled chaos that was the trademark of the original movies.
The original director, Brett Ratner, who hasn’t been active for years, is reportedly returning to helm the project. The franchise stalled because of the effective black-listing of Ratner. With no willing studio, no funding, and no distribution path, “Rush Hour 4” couldn’t get off the ground — even though the actors had intermittently expressed interest and scripts were sometimes discussed. But, seems like hope has risen for the franchise.

The big names tied to the franchise, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, are reportedly onboard. Fans of the original will likely breathe a sigh of relief — because yes, the legendary Detective Lee & Detective Carter duo might be back in action. Chan even jokingly said they need to “hurry up”, else by the time the film’s done, they’d be “100 years old.” Classic Chan-style humour.
What’s the Timeline? Don’t Hold Your Breath (Yet)
Here’s the thing: as of now, there’s no official release date. The project appears to be in early development. Studio insiders suggest that if everything goes smoothly, we might see filming begin sometime in 2026. Also with a possible release somewhere in 2027 or 2028. But with movies, you know… plans often change.
What Could Go Wrong (or Right)? The Good & The “Hmm”
The Good: The nostalgia factor is real. Chan + Tucker + Ratner = a revival of a franchise that defined 90’s/00’s buddy-cop-comedy vibes. If done right, it could hit the sweet spot between funny and action packed, reminding us why we loved the originals.
The “Hmm”: Let’s be real. Ratner’s past controversies still cast a shadow. His comeback is raising eyebrows, especially given the #MeToo allegations years ago. Also, juggling availability, script, and expectations after such a long gap won’t be easy.
