Saw X is directed by Kevin Greutert who has helmed previous Saw movies. Apart from being the 10th instalment of the franchise, Saw X is also the concluding chapter of the trilogy that began with Jigsaw (2018) which was followed by 2021’s Spiral. James Wan totally changed the horror game when he made the first Saw movie in 2004. The innovative nature and success of the first film triggered an entire franchise which might be the most successful long running horror franchise.
Saw X’ official synopsis reads, “Hoping for a miraculous cure, John Kramer travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure, only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer uses deranged and ingenious traps to turn the tables on the con artists.” The title might suggest that this is the last of the Saw movies but if you know Hollywood then a franchise never truly dies especially if it is critically and commercially viable. So, how is Saw X’ critical reception?
Saw X Early Reviews And Reactions Call It The Best Saw Movie Since The Original!
Chris Killian (Comicbook.com) – “While I was at Universal today, the social embargo lifted so I can tell you that [‘Saw X’] is gruesome, hard-to-watch, and probably the best ‘Saw’ sequel in about 15 years. It wedges perfectly between 1-2 and unveils a side of Jigsaw we haven’t seen before. ‘Saw’ fans will enjoy it.”
Shannon McGrew (Nightmarish Conjurings’) – “Now that the social embargo has lifted I’m happy to announce that [‘Saw X’] is one of the BEST additions to the franchise. It brings back the original essence of the first film while also allowing the audience to gain deeper insight into [John] Kramer. Plus, the traps are *chef kiss*”
Kaitlyn Booth (Bleeding Cool) – “I got to see [‘Saw X’], and it was the first [‘Saw’ movie] I’ve seen. Tobin Bell really is something in this role, and I can see why interest dwindles without him, and he’s in this a lot. I think the fans will like it, but will it convert a new one? I’m still on the fence.”
Simon Thompson – “[‘Saw X’] is bound hands down one of the best in the franchise. Putting John Kramer centre stage more than ever works brilliantly and Tobin Bell slays. Amanda’s ‘return’ is executed brilliantly and the traps are amongst some of the best, even when quite simple, plus the story is.”
JoBlo.com – “Our own @zombievictim caught #SawX in Vegas last week and had a bloody good time with it. He calls it a return to form for the series with Shawnee Smith stealing the show as Amanda. That’s not to discredit Tobin Bell, who gives his best Jigsaw performance yet.”
Vannah Taylor – “Safe to say that I think [‘Saw X’] is easily one of the best crafted films in the franchise. Without sacrificing any of the key ingredients that make a great ‘Saw’ film, this new installment delivers a more emotional story than I had anticipated…oh and it’s a bloody good time.”
Saw X is slated to release in theatres near you on September 28th, 2023.
