It’s been over a decade since the last mainline Shrek movie. However, the franchise has lived in the form of Puss in Boots animated spin-offs. The latest being Puss in Boots: The Last Wish excelling at the box office, grossing almost half a billion dollars this year! Now seemingly another adventure is coming from Dreamworks and here’s what we know so far about Shrek 5.
Plot and Cast of Shrek 5
In March 2017, Shrek 5 screenwriter Michael McCullers revealed, “‘Shrek 5’ is being developed. I finished that script, which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal at that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. Reinvention was sort of called for. There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”
Chris Melendandri said in an interview with Variety, “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.” So, even though the plot is unknown, the potential release will look a little different than anything that we have seen so far.
The expected actor and character list to appear on Shrek 5 – Mike Myers – Shrek, Eddie Murphy – Donkey, Cameron Diaz – Princess Fiona, and Antonio Banderas – Puss in Boots. There are rumors about Pied Piper, the supporting character in Shrek Forever After, being the villain in Shrek 5. Another name that could come up is Shrek 1 antagonist Lord Farquaad. Amidst all the talk of reinventing the franchise, it would be a great spot to bring back the villains.
Release Date of Shrek 5
Fans have to wait for a trailer as Shrek 5 is still in its early stages of production. Universal usually pairs Illumination and Dreamworks for its films with the theatrical debut of others. Given the uncertainty of releases due to the ongoing strikes, all the projects could get shuffled because of the lengthy work stoppages in the industry.
Shrek 5 is still early in development with no official release date.
