I have said it before and I’ll say it again, 2022 was a golden year for horror movies after a long time. We got innovative movies like Smile, Barbarian, Fresh, Scream, etc. I loved almost of all them. However, there was one horror film released last year that did not sit right well with me – The Black Phone. This was perhaps the most hyped I was for a horror film and boy was I disappointed. The Black Phone featured in my worst movies of 2022 list. On paper, the film had everything right to be amazing – Scott Derrickson as the director, a famous short story and Ethan Hunt as a serial killer. I mean what more could you wish for? However, the film turned out be extremely dull and did not scare me even a bit. However, other people seem to enjoy it as The Black Phone grossed $161 million against a budget of $18 million. Naturally, this paved way for a new horror franchise and the sequel seems like a reunion of the original cast.
The Black Phone 2: Ethan Hunt Reprises The Role Of The Grabber!
Along with a release date, Blumhouse and Universal have also announced the confirmed cast of The Black Phone 2. The horror sequel will see the return of its five main stars, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora, as well as Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, despite the character’s death in the first movie. No production start date has been revealed at the time of writing. It will be interesting to see how Derrickson manages to continue the story as the first film had a very definite ending.
Black Phone is based on the short story of the same title by Joe Hill. Set in 1978 Denver, the film stars Ethan Hawke in the role of a terrifying kidnapper known as The Grabber. The Grabber’s most recent victim in TBP is Finney (played by Mason Thames), who discovers that he can contact The Grabber’s dead victims through a disconnected black phone in the soundproof cellar where he is being held hostage.
The Black Phone is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27th, 2025.
