The Black Phone’s director, Scott Derrickson, says there may be potential for a sequel to the horror movie. Well-versed in the horror genre, Derrickson is known for some of the films he’s written and directed, including Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Along with writing and directing Doctor Strange, he collaborated on The Black Phone with C. Robert Cargill, his writing partner. We’ll move on to that but first check, check out our review for The Black Phone.
The Black Phone 2 Will Most Probably Happen
The film is based on the short story of the same title by Joe Hill. Set in 1978 Denver, the film stars Ethan Hawke in the role of a terrifying kidnapper known as The Grabber. Part of the reason behind this setting is Derrickson’s experience growing up in North Denver in the late 70s and the palpable fear of being abducted or killed during that time because of the era’s serial killers like Charles Manson and Ted Bundy. The Grabber’s most recent victim in The Black Phone is Finney (played by Mason Thames), who discovers that he can contact The Grabber’s dead victims through a disconnected black phone in the soundproof cellar where he is being held hostage.
When discussing the possibilities of a The Black Phone sequel with ComicBook, Derrickson says that Hill has already given him an idea for the film and that he is excited about the possibility if The Black Phone performs well at the box office. Derrickson also mentions that Hill is very protective of his creation, which may be why specifics about any upcoming sequel’s narrative aspects are being kept under wraps.
Derrickson Wishes To Work With Hill Again
Due to several factors, including Derrickson’s expertise as a horror director and Hawke’s unsettling portrayal of The Grabber, The Black Phone has the potential to do well at the box office. Released on June 24, critics have also highly praised the film; it currently has an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The year is treating horror fans well as Joran Peele’s Nope, the next much-anticipated horror movie, is hitting theatres on July 22.
Considering Derrickson’s desire to continue working with Hill, a sequel is highly likely should the first film become popular due to its cast, direction, and critically acclaimed source material. The Black Phone 2 could potentially take form as a prequel, centering on one of the deceased people Finney contacts using the phone. It might also follow Finney as he confronts the consequences of his encounter with The Grabber. Until any sequel announcements are made, viewers can now catch the film in theatres.
