The Holdovers is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Many people are even labelling it “movie of the year”. The film is already in the Oscars race and will most definitely attract some golden statuettes. Alexandra Payne is at the helm of affairs, we know from films like Downsizing, The Descendants, Nebraska, About Schmidt and Sideways. Payne is a master when it comes to finding comedy in tragedy. All his films follow this trope and follow it well. From what I understand, Payne was always a niche director but with The Holdovers I think he has cracked into some mainstream recognition, especially if the film performs well at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The film had a quiet theatrical release earlier this year, so, don’t blame yourself if you missed it in cinemas. The Holdovers’ Physical Media Release Date Is Coming Soon!
As mentioned above, The Holdovers had a limited theatrical release in the US at the end of October this year. Made on a tiny budget of $18 million, the film earned almost the same amount in its theatrical run ($17.9 million). So, the film might be a critical success but it didn’t bring the big bucks home. Naturally, the studio is resorting to other ways to make its budget back. The Holdovers was made available for purchase on digital and VOD platforms like Vudu, Amazon Prime Video and Apple iTunes on November 28th, 2023.
The film has found success on digital platforms and today we also know the film’s physical media release date. According to a recent listing by dvdreleases, The Holdovers will be available for purchase on physical media formats like DVD and Blu-ray from January 2nd, 2024. Just as the Oscar buzz starts, audiences will be able to buy the film and enjoy one of the most wholesome experiences of the year. We don’t have any update on the film’s streaming release date. There is no big studio behind the film so we will have to wait for a streaming deal to be signed.
The Holdovers stars Paul Giamatti, Dominic Sessa, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brady Hepner, Carrie Preston and Gillian Vigman. As mentioned, the film is currently available for purchase on digital and VOD platforms.
